What can you tell me about West Sacramento?
It wouldn't be a horrible drive to Folsom for work, and it seems to have affordable houses and builders... I know it is close to Elk Grove, and people seem to think Elk Grove has too much crime. I don't know about either place personally.
Thanks!

I think the south side of West Sac is very nice. This is considered the Southport/Bridgeway Island area (also Bridgeway Lakes). I've had no worries of safety after living here (as a single woman) for 5 years. There is Nugget Market, Target, and Lowes very close. More restaurants are coming.
If you want to be closer to downtown Sac and don't mind a transitional area the north side of town has some interesting housing development. The "Triangle" area is close to Raley Field and the Tower bridge. It has some modern looking housing. Also close to the I Street Bridge there is a nice housing. These areas are probably better for singles or couples without kids, but are very cool (to me).
You are probably going to hear things like...West Sac has gangs and is bad. I also thought this after an old rep, mostly related to to the sketchy looking Capitol Ave area when I was growing up. Right now that street has improved greatly. Yes, you will see homeless and sketchy looking people there. But that is miles away from where I live.
West Sac is still a pretty small town. The poorer parts of it is not really a huge population. It is not like like living in Elk Grove and having South Sac right next to you.
Finally, we have an amazing innovative mayor. This has really given the town vision.
And...with our close proximity to Downtown Sac, I think this adds to the long time appeal of the area. With gas prices so high, you can actually bike downtown from West Sac or take a short bus ride.
Obviously, I'm a fan!

West Sacramento isn't close to Elk Grove...it is west of Sacramento, Elk Grove is to the south.
There's a streetcar line going in in a few years, from the West Sacramento city hall to the Sacramento convention center.
Lots of interesting new housing...my favorite is a project called "Good" built by LJ Urban. The project is LEED and LEED-ND certified for energy efficiency, use of recycled/recyclable materials, and other innovative design features.

I think you're better off staying in the Antelope area for the commute and for the crime. Antelope has its issues as well, but I don't think they're as bad as West Sac. And your commute is going to be horrible. Depending on where your house will be, you'll be commuting with everyone on 80 East trying to get on to 50 (with you) or Cap City Freeway (Bus 80). That is aweful traffic.
What about just trying to get a nicer place in Rancho Cordova, Citrus Heights, Carmichael or Orangevale? All of these places are better (crime wise, schools too) than West Sac. The homes are older with bigger lots. The schools are not great, but not as bad as West Sac. West Sac a couple of years back fired a bunch of their teachers for not doing, what the big wigs think, a good job. It is a poorly run district. San Juan and Folsom Cordova aren't the best in the area, but better than West Sac.
Please someone correct me if I'm wrong about this, but the commute alone will be bad. My hubby used to commute from North Natomas to Folsom (both places right off the highway). It took 45 minutes in the a.m. and 60 minutes in the p.m. You can just add at least 10 minutes onto that to calculate your commute. I'd say keep looking somewhere else.

Hmmm, thank you everyone. I was thinking that because it looks like you can just jump on 50, it wouldn't be too bad a drive to Folsom. (He used to drive from Yuba City!) But it sounds like it may be too long after all. Although I have heard that west Sac is really up and coming. It should be, with the right leadership. Good location!

"Just jump on 50" is one of those famous last words...it's kind of like saying "just invade Russia."
West Sac to Folsom is probably a slightly shorter commute than Natomas to Folsom, or Antelope to Folsom.

You know, I keep hearing about crime in West Sac, but I've never seen anything to back it up. Since moving to Southport, I've felt a great deal safer than I did when I was living in the Pocket, which is a great area of Sacramento. Does anybody have some actual numbers or something? All anybody ever seems to come up with is the injunction (which, in my opinion, is ridiculously overblown) and the unfortunate incident on the train tracks a few years back.

I moved to West Sac about 3 weeks ago and am very pleased. I am also on the south end of it. Close to Nugget, Target, etc. Neighborhood is quiet.
