Hi
I have an opportunity to relocate from Reno, Nevada to Sacramento or the surrounding area. I need to indicate what salary I would have to make to live comfortably in this area. I am an IT specialist who currently works for a Television Statiion. Can anyone help me? I would like to live in a very nice middle class neighborhood buy or rent and have a nice middle class life for my wife and family.

How much do you make right now? And how much would be a comfortable amount to live that life in Reno?

Use the comfortable Reno salary, go to a cost of living calculater (google it) and find out the exhange amount

Unfortunately, a nice middle class house costs more than a nice middle class income can afford...

Default Check out

I have found salary calculators/comparisons online and found them to be very helpful. Just type salary comparisons on google. Basically, you type in where you live now, how much you make, and where youre moving to. It then provides you with what you would have to make at the new location to maintain the same standard of living. Sorry I dont have the actualy links to those sites, but you shouldnt have any problems finding them. Good luck!

Exactly, a nice middle class income here gets you a house in a not so nice neighborhood. A lower middle income get you a house in the slums.

Stay in Nevada. California is only for wealthy people. "Middle class" and below will just be spinning their wheels. Is your salary really that great if 90% of it is going towards rent or mortgage? I think not.

On a positive note. . . I understand that the housing market isn't bubbling and full of opps in Reno (I spent three yrs. as a kid in Reno and loved it, so I'm not dissing it at all). By moving to Sac, you're automatically in a region that has a lot more jobs. Although the current outlook may not be hot, that'll change over time.

Plus our home prices are dropping dramatically. Now's the time to consider getting in if that's your goal.

Last, as someone who is really sick of mowing a large yard in 95+ heat, I'd love to put my middle class family in a beautiful condo!! My dh totally disagrees of course, but think about it: no yard to mow, a maintained pool, people around so I don't freak out when my husband is out of town. Sounds good to me!! (I know, nobody agrees with me on this one.)

To be specific, my IT husband makes almost 80 a yr and we live on one income and have two kids. We bought when prices were still low in 2000 so we "only" pay $1500 mortgage, but as you can guess money is tight. I'm looking forward to bringing in some income in the next year! And he's expecting a promotion.

Be careful when you do move to move into a good school district w/ a good school. No point in putting together a beautiful budget only to have to pay for private school.

I'd say you're safe school-wise if you look into Gold River. That neighborhood feeds into one of the best high schools we have. And a lot of Fair Oaks feeds into Bella Vista, another great HS. The Folsom High School scores are awesome too. Their housing prices really range so you might find something affordable. (Even if your kids aren't HS age, I think it's important to plan. Just my MO.)

What industry are you looking at in Sac? TV here too? (I'm a media relations person.)

Oops, I meant to say that the houses in Gold River really range price wise and my friends who live there really love it. Close to the freeway, the river, a great Italian, In & Out!!

You could ask for $250K a year. That would be a good starting point.
