Default Where to get cheap furniture in Sacramento

Need to furnish a 1BR apartment as inexpensively as possible relatively quickly. What are my options in the Sac area? I know that Target, Walmart etc. have cheap furniture online (I don't mind if it's put-together) but once you add shipping, they are not so cheap anymore plus there seems to be a few week lead time.

I heard Big Al's is a no-frills place. Any experience with them? Any other places I should look?

For a mattress, any other places besides Mattress Discounters?

All comments/advice much appreciated.

Ikea in West Sacramento is a good place to start. Big Al's stuff isn't that much cheaper and the furniture is kind of tacky. If you prefer older furniture I'd recommend looking at The Antique Company on 21st and X or Taber on Del Paso--look in the back rooms for the deals.

Ikea sells a couple of different grades of furniture. The cheapest grade tends to be particle board covered with a laminate. That stuff gets nicked easily and the laminate tends to seperate off pretty easily. It has zero durability. That is also the problem with a lot of the furniture at Target and Walmart as well.

The Deseret Industries Thrift Store on Auburn Blvd sells new furniture made by disabled folks in Utah. This stuff is pine, not laminate. Its well made and durable and still less expensive than the poorly constructed laminate stuff. It also has some used furniture, but the used furniture in the the thrift stores can often be fairly beat up, so you have to be a dedicated shopper to find good used stuff at the thiftstores.

The other places to get better used furniture would be estate sales and the classified section on craigslist. I have found pretty good deals on the used Thomasville/Ethan Allen furniture on craigslist.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Craigslist etc would be great for some things but since I'm new in town, I don't have anyone to help load/unload bigger items. Hoping to find a store with reasonable delivery options. Does anyone know what a store like IKEA would charge to deliver something like a sofa to midtown?

Home Depot rents pickups by the hour. Ikea's delivery fees aren't cheap. Nor is it particularly well made.
