Does it feel like Autumn?
See how removed I am? I've forgotten what it feel like in Autumn in Sac.
You guys probably think it feels like Autumn? I've been watching the weather - and you are in the high 70s/low 80s lately, and that's a hot August day in Seattle.
Seattle's been in the 50s and cloudy raining (like usual) and if the sun comes out it will be in the high 50s/low 60s - very October weather I'd suspect. Feels like Autumn alot here.
It occurs to be that what "feels" like autumn to me now, might not be "Feeling" it in Sac. I remember October to be one of my favorite months in Sac, but seeing it in the 80s makes me feel like it's still summer there?
I dunno - thought I'd ask you guys how it feels right now.
Are the trees in Midtown dropping their leaves? I bet it's beautiful.

Looking out the window of my office in Roseville, the tops of trees are definitely turning color.
I agree with you -- the recent 80s temps, while mild, have kept us in the mentality that it is still summer. (My wife and I were joking just yesterday that in SF -- where we relocated from -- we would have described this weather as "swelteringly hot".) But, the morning and evenings are actually cool enough to warrant wearing a jacket now.

The leaves in Midtown are starting to turn and drop, and I just bought a lightweight jacket. It is still unnecessary during the day, but I'm usually out until 9:00 either in class or some meeting (or, ideally, going to some show) and by that time it's nice to slip on a jacket.
And yes, October is usually like this. Just about ideally warm during the day, but the nights get a bit crisp. If there is any doubt that this is not summer, the notable inability to fry an egg on the sidewalk should be an indicator.
This is the time of year when walking around Midtown is pretty much at its most glorious. The tree cover is still there but it's starting to turn colors, and the wind is dropping the weaker leaves to the ground. Strolling around is comfortable, and the breeze brings the first smells of decay, including the smells from a particular species of tree whose vernacular name I shall not repeat here. A cup of coffee feels comfortably warming but it isn't necessary to stave off hypothermia. People are out on the street because it is neither too hot to leave the house nor raining. It's comfortable enough to wear a leather jacket or something decoratively gaudy but in a pinch you can still just wear an old band T-shirt and be okay.
It's just the beginning of fall here, and while it may not be paradise, it is an adequate substitute.

In terms of climate, I think the evenings in the summertime are pretty tough to beat in Sacramento. Generally by 7 pm, its nice enough in the summer to go play tennis or go for a nice run.
But I also think fall is pretty nice in Sacramento. Because its less humid in Sacramento, I think the 80's in Sacramento are largely comparable to the 70's along the coast. While the leaves are just starting to change in Sacramento they are pretty close to peak in up in Nevada City in the week or two before Halloween. The color change peaks in the valley closer to mid November. So usually about this time of year, I go see the brandywine maples up in Nevada City and stop off for pasties. I am not sure why, because you can get them in Sacramento but the pasties in Nevada city just seem better.
If you aren't familiar with the brandywine maples, they are the maples with the brilliant golds that were brought out by the gold miners from Brandywine, Pennsylvania. You can see some of them among the pictures on the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce website, but they are much more impressive in person than in these pictures.

The tree by my apartment's balcony is dropping its leaves. Today the weather is cool and cloudy. They're expecting rain this weekend and again later in the week. I love this part of the year and winter too.

Is the air breathable up there in NorCal? We've still got a bit of the Santa Ana winds down here so it's hot AND dry. It's driving me crazy.

It has been a darn near perfect week here. The weather was clear and cool up until today, now it's a little cloudy and we're supposed to get rain tomorrow but the whole week has been glorious. I bought a sandwich to eat on the benches over by the courthouse but everyone else had the same idea, I had to go sit on the edge of a planter box to eat my sandwich but even that was scads better than going back to the office and eating at my desk (no window!)

Wanna know what's funny? 70 degrees here is a hot July day - we've been in the 40s and low 50s since mid sept. All our leaves are gone now
