Red face Travel nursing in Placerville

I am considering a travel nursing position at Marshall Medical Center in Placerville. My husband and I are looking for something short-term to enjoy before we settle down in Ohio and start our family. We enjoy a Northern California climate (on the cooler side) and while we're not big outdoors people we do enjoy nature and some hiking. We have been in NYC for several years and look forward to getting away from that sort of pace and being somewhere relaxing and beautiful. From the little I've read, Placerville might be a nice fit, but I'd love to hear some opinions. We are concerned mainly with having a pleasant day-to-day experience in a friendly, and being well-located to explore the area on our days off. Does anyone have any opinions about Placerville in terms of what we're looking for? Also, if anyone has any input about working for Marshall that would be great as well.

Thanks in advance!

Placerville is a nice town small and but not a lot of work, I have lived here almost 20 years and I am ready to move. We moved here so we could buy a house and raise our daughter in a smaller school district. The town has changed a lot since we moved here, like most places but it has brought in alot more people. I would say most people are friendly but I have lived in my current house for almost 2 years and do not know my neighbors. As far as things to do lakes and rivers nearby a movie theater, bowling alley in Pollock Pines, not a lot of shopping choices.

Placerville gets pretty warm in the summer time and stays warm enough in the winter to mostly escape the snow. If you are looking for a climate on the cooler side of Northern California, you might prefer the North Coast which rarely gets above 80 or further up the Sierra were its stays cooler in the summer and and still gets some snow in the winter. Climatically Placerville isn't much cooler than the Sacramento valley, maybe 4 or 5 degrees less than Sacramento at most.

Overall though Placerville is nice community its in the Sierra foothills, in an area known locally as the Gold Country because the foothills including Placerville was the site of a lot of gold mining during the California gold rush. Generally you are surrounded by a mixture of Oak woodlands and some valley pines. It is high enough up the mountains, where you will avoid a lot of the winter tule fog that hits the Sacramento Valley. It is a pretty area.

I love Placerville. I have lived here for 20 years and have no plans of moving. In terms of climate, you can work at Marshall in Placerville, but choose to live a number of places nearby with vastly different climates. going "down the hill" 20 minutes toward Sac, you can live in Shingle Springs with no snow, but hot in Summer. Fifteen minutes "up the hill" toward Tahoe you can live in Pollack Pines. Mild Summers, but all the snow you could want in Winter. Good luck.

This is gonna be a huge difference from NYC. Placerville has some very nice aspects to it. As stated before down hill from Placerville (toward Sacramento) will become warmer and more urban. Uphill will be cooler and less urban. There is not a lot of mall type shopping with big name stores. One of the main traffic draw backs is the stop lights on hwy 50. This creates a backup when busy. Having a good job in town will be a big plus. Most people commute toward Sacramento for work.

Are you already contracted as a traveling nurse? Would you consider a more perm. type position there if available? I have a friend...

I've never lived in Placerville but know it pretty well, having grown up in Sacramento. I would think it would be a great place to enjoy for you and your husband, especially if it's just temporary. Whatever negatives you find there would undoubtedly be easier to take knowing it's temporary. And if you don't find many negatives, maybe you'll rethink the Ohio idea. :-)

I once knew a travel nurse who often worked in locations for as little as 3 months. Is that the case with you? Just wondering if you would be there long enough to experience all the seasons.

One big advantage to Placerville is (as mentioned previously) it being above the tule fog that often settles in the valley. It can be dreary, damp and gray in Sacramento for weeks on end in the winter, while being beautifully sunny in the foothills (including Placerville) at the same time. You will get more rain there than Sacramento gets, being on the west side of the Sierra (more intense rainfall, not more storms). There is also some snow, occasionally, but not very often and usually light.

Although the elevation of Placerville isn't very high, it still has sort of a high mountain feel to it. There is some very rugged terrain in the general area, which is quite pretty. You'd only be 50 miles or so from South Lake Tahoe. Hwy 50 runs through town, and those stoplights do make it a parking lot when the hordes from Sacramento and the Bay Area are coming and going from Tahoe (usually the beginning and end of the weekends). Not quite sure why those stoplights have never been removed.

The downtown area has sort of a late 1800s feel to it, but there's new buildings around as well. You will find none of the hustle and bustle of the city there. But San Francisco would be about a 3-hour drive if you get a craving for that. As far as hiking, there are tons and tons of hikes you could do in the general area.

Shopping is limited, but for a larger variety you could drive about 20 miles down the hill to Folsom, which is on the eastern edge of Sacramento, or go all the way in to Sacramento (about 45 miles).

I would say go for it! We love the Placerville area. My wife and I always look for job openings at Marshall because we want to go back up to this area. My wife is a Dietitian and I am a Director of Environmental Services at a hospital in LA. Our positions are not in demand such as being a nurse. Someday, we will be back up in the Sac area.
