Sorry to revive an older thread, but I fell in love with Davis when we visted this summer. I'm curious as to how the schools are in nearby areas (Winters?) since Davis did seem very pricey to me.

Before you decide to come to UCDavis, do you have a job already? All opening have been slashed and the campus has begun laying folks off.

Dixon is a small affordable city and only 8 miles from Davis on the freeway. It is so small it is approved for USDA home loans, right in line with your new income level and incentives and low rates. Since is located in the next county, Solano, it is more affordable than Yolo county and Davis. Smart growth but still a small town with some industry, Genentech research facility, shopping, 2 Starbucks, Safeway and a Super Walmart. Brand new high school, new Gretchen Higgins elementary school too. Approx $160/sf homes for sale right now. Bike paths are all around, bike to Davis if you want. Fishing at the creeks or the Sacramento River (delta) is within 20 mins too. Cache Creek is mainly an Indian casino surrounded by walnut ranches. Call a buyer agent and ask for an area tour.
