Yes, Shingle Springs is a reasonable commute (well, what is your definition? An hour is ok to me, and there is the bus or light rail to get you there...). Buckeye school district has a Shingle Springs campus where the teachers know the good kids even

and it it like a little country school. Shingle Springs fits your down-to-earth description, and there is acreage.
I did the SS to Sac commute for 5 years, and it didn't bother me, although I came from SoCal and was used to commuting. If you leave not at the heaviest traffic time, it's generally 45 minutes to 1 hr depending on what part of Sac you are going to. Traffic in rain, or on Friday evenings coming home during ski season, is heavy, and expect 1.5 hours to even 2 hours on the VERY worst days - for me, I think that happened maybe once a year. There are commuter busses and light rail down in Folsom.
