Red Hawk Casino opened recently in Shingle Springs off Hwy 50. Has anybody been there yet and is it worth a visit? Is the buffet food any good? Give me a report .

My sister went and said it was huge. It was very nice with six restaurants and a beer bar. She said the only odd thing was that the slot machines don't take coins, just paper money.

No coin slots?? Wow...then it must be upscale! LOL! What about the buffet? As good as Thunder Valley's? Although that has gone down, IMO, in the past year or so. How does it compare to Thunder Valley, if you've been there, in ambience, decor, etc. So I guess they are selling alcohol there, too. Thunder Valley was one of of the first, if not the first Indian casino to serve liquor because they raised the age for gambling from 18 to 21 yrs. old. at the behest of local lawmakers who were afraid that high school teens would end up gambling there, and become addicted. That was a stupid decision, as the potential harm from alcohol-related incidents (car accidents, DUI's,etc.) is far more likely and real than the mere possibility of teens aquiring a gambling addiction. But it ended up being to the casino's benefit, as I'm sure they make a lot more money on selling drinks than they would have on potential teenage customers gambling.

Most newer slot machines don't take coins anymore. And when you cash out, the machine gives you a ticket which you take to a cashier window to get your money . I miss the old mechanical slots with the sound of coins hitting the metal bucket .

I'm wondering how many people are using the daycare out there. That sounds a bit scary. Especially if you have a young one that can't even talk yet.

I'm not impressed with the buffet given its cost ($18.99 dinner, except Fri-Sat dinner, it's more like $26.99 I think, because of seafood). If you go, go for lunch for a more reasonable $12.99, and try to get a seat near the windows for a lovely view. It's hard to compare to Thunder Valley, because their buffet has gone way down, not good, in the past 2 years. We used to drive there and enjoyed it...now we won't go back. We actually prefer Jackson's much smaller buffet, we think the quality of the food is better, and the price is reasonable.

humboldtrat, funny you say that about the sound of the coins, my dh misses that too! He doesn't enjoy gambling nearly as much with the paper tickets! Sometimes, we go to North Tahoe to go to the older casinos for the coins...

We have used the daycare - KidsQuest. My son is 5 and begs to go back. They have a huge play area (think a McDonalds playground on steroids), and they have "free" video games including the car/motorcycle type games. It is a major treat for him to go there. It's about $8/hr I think. Not sure if I would leave a tiny one there though.

I was about to say the same. I haven't seen many machines take coins in the past 5 years or so. I missed the sound for awhile, but now I love the new ticket in, ticket out machines.
