Lived in Sac for a year in 2003 and loved every minute of it. Of course if you're insensitive to history, politics, sports, water recreation, theater, film, literature, the best restaurant food on the West Coast costwise (the carnitas at Maria's on Del Paso etc) then I guess Sacramento won't have much to offer you.

the important thing here to remember, most are not claiming Sacramento is San Francisco, DC or NYC, it is Sacramento with its own charm. There will always be those that prefer the more elite cities for snob purposes if nothing else, but life can be very good in Sacramento. This isn't saying it is the most exciting or cultural city in the country, but if one looks, one can find a lot that it has to offer.

That's a bit too open-ended. More information is needed such as how many of you there are, do you have children, what kind of work do you do, do you have a job lined up, what's your housing budget, do you plan to rent or buy, how large or small a space do you want, what kind of neighborhood, do you plan to drive, walk, bicycle or use public transit to get to and from work, how far/long are you willing to commute, suburbs or central city, etc.?

Folsom, Fair Oaks, Gold River, Mid-Town. Run searches on Craigslist for rentals or call a real estate agent if you want to buy. Make sure your wallet matches your dreams.

Hello Mr. Ozo, wburg, dgjps, where are the areas you all live in the city? Also, where are the safer, more convenient for shopping, going for a walk, etc areas?
My husband and I went to Redding a few months ago, we stoped by Sacramento and were amazed how beautiful the Sacramento river area was, but we didn't have time to explore the city on that trip. We have been looking all over California to find a place to retire to and we would love to know more about good places to live in your city.

I live in Midtown, but it might not be your cup of tea--it's extremely convenient for shopping and going for a walk, and in my opinion the heart of the most beautiful part of the city, but it's kind of noisy and lively because it has become the regional destination for entertainment, live music, street festivals, and binge drinking.

There are quieter neighborhoods on the northeast and southeast corners of the old city (Boulevard Park, Marshall School, New Era Park, Poverty Ridge, Newton Booth) and I know quite a few active seniors who live there (as well as in Midtown.) Many are long-time Sacramento residents or empty-nesters who sold off their suburban home and moved to a smaller place in the central city. If you don't mind living in what is most definitely a city environment (which means traffic, homeless, graffiti, and a certain amount of crime) it can be a nice place.

The neighborhoods a bit farther south and east, East Sacramento, Curtis Park, and Land Park, are also nice, a bit safer, a bit quieter, and a bit more expensive.

Thanks wburg, you might be right about living in town, but just out of curiosity, which area is Midtown on the map? What kind of stores: supermarkets, health food stores or Targets near by?
West Sacramento was mentioned before, is it like still like living in the city or is it another suburb?
