Commuting from West Roseville to Capitol Ave downtown
Hi,
We are thinking to purchase a house in Westpark Roseville, but we are having second thoughts about the 45 min commute one way. How do people live in this area (west roseville in general and westpark in particular) deal with the commute? any shortcuts?
Thank you

The sane folks look for housing locations closer to where they plan to work.
Traffic is bad on 80. Its going to get much worse. The region is a non attainment region for air quality standards. In practice that means that the region isn't going to be adding much freeway capacity even if it could somehow find funding for that type of transportation project. Even new carpool lanes create massive litigation.
If you really like living in Roseville, find a job in Roseville. If you have employment in Sacramento look for housing closer to where you work. There are places near downtown, that are probably comparible to Roseville in terms of safety. Look at Greenhaven, East Sac, or River Park. If you are looking for better schools, look at Sierra Oaks, or Arden Park.
But the idea of commuting from Roseville to downtown Sacramento just seems really unnecessary.

I agree with everything Jimbo stated. I-80 is a complete mess - your commute home would be a pain, too, since it's all ripped up before Douglas. The Pocket Area and East Sac would probably be your more comparable regions if your job is downtown. I honestly don't think 45 minutes is even likely given recent traffic trends. I'd give yourself an hour or so.
I used to commute from Rancho Cordova to Natomas every day and it's an even shorter distance - granted US50 isn't I-80, but the commute was terrible. It really got to me.

Not going on I-80
We are not going on I-80. Somebody told me we can go to Capitol via FIddeyment Rd and then Walegra Rd to Sacramento. What do you think about that route? also, what area consitutes East Sac?

Another route to Sacramento from Roseville is Pleasant Grove to Hiway 99 and I-5 to downtown area. The American River is your major obstacle between Roseville and Sacramento. There are NO secret passages to getting over the river.
Walerga to the Cap City Freeway is going to land you on Cap City Freeway prior to the I-80 split which is another major bottleneck.
I consider East Sacramento to be the area East of Capitol City Freeway with the American River as your North and East boundaries, and Folsom Blvd. as your South Boundary.

You're talking WAY out there. That would be 10 times longer, especially with traffic lights and everything else.
It's just not really a wise commute no matter how you slice it.
The Pleasant Grove to 99 route would take close to an hour, I'm guessing. I drove it once and never would again. Way too far. You're talking back roads which doesn't always mean faster.

How do people deal with commuting from Roseville to downtown Sacramento? I'd imagine it involves a lot of heavy drinking. I can't imagine spending 10-12 hours a week staring at people's taillights.

Time is worth way more than money. 300+ hours per year commuting to/from work is not in the best interest of people and their families, better schools or not.
Parental involvement is most important for success in school. That is best achieved living close to work.
