On a related topic ... for avoiding that backup in Fairfield where 680N merges into 80E, has anyone tried backroads? I'm thinking that it might be interesting to try to diagonal over to 12E from some point a few miles south of Cordellia, skirting the southern portions until merging into 12 somewhere prior to Travis. Anyone tried this? Does it save any time versus slogging through the gridlock at the main junction?

And then of course leaving 12 and diagonalling back up to 80 somewhere past the Vacaville outlets.

Rosevillebaby is on a distinguished road
Default really think this out (from those who know)

congratulations to your wife. Here is the truth.
My husband has a home office in Roseville but his territory is Bay Area, Seattle and Oregon. Technology. We have young kids and if you do, just look at the whole situation...kids, school, events, appts, sick kids, etc. The congestion happens in various areas of your commute...880 is hideous at times. The 680 corridor into Walnut Creek stacks up...accidents on 80 all the time. You can park around Fairfield.

If you are puttting in regular work hours..I would try:staying down two days, tuesday and wednesday, leave thursday. Can you drive during the off hours and make up the work? AVOID friday at all costs..everyone going to Tahoe, lakes. etc, state workers..you will be fried.

Give yourself 3 hours to make it in the morning.
Leave after 8 pm in the evenings
Stock up on energy drinks
Plan to be fatigued and work it out who is more tired when you get back, her if you have young children or you from the drive..it will be both.
See if you can find work up here..not ideal time. We thought more tech hubs would have moved here but they have not and many have shut down. Maybe it will change...later.
Look at wear and tear on car, gas if no mileage...

Just wanted to give you an honest account from those that know..BTW.
We like it here and it has good for our children but it is hard and I would like to synthesize our life...all closer, not sure how yet but closer to husband's work.

best of luck
