Freeway congestion on Interstate 80 Westbound
Does anyone know why Interstate 80 WESTBOUND is so congested going past Sacramento on a SATURDAY around noon?? There was a temporary freeway sign that said "expect congestion next 12 miles". But I did not see any cause for the congestion, ie no accidents, no construction, no lane closures.. please clarify if you can. This makes it difficult to head to the Bay Area on the weekend.

He he he...
It was one of the days that upper classmen and grad students run away from Davis for...
It was THE UCDAVIS PICNIC DAY!!!
-Actually, it's not all that bad. But you really only need to go once a decade (I'm set for at least another 20 years)...

Because there's three lanes the whole way, the Yolo Causeway freaks people out, you have a lot more cars getting on the freeway in the Davis area that adds to the congestion, there are few hills past Davis (and we all know that people can't keep a steady speed going up for down hills), you went on a Saturday (the day when people get out and do things) and most of all, people can't friggin' drive.

Was this going on on Sunday as well? We were on I-80 east bound when we saw the congestion on the other side.

I routinely run into parking-lot-like conditions on I-80 and I think it's mostly just how many people live here now, because I usually don't see accidents or hear about any problems.
I've tried to get from Sacramento to Rocklin on Saturdays and have given up before I got to Roseville. Even if I do get there, coming home usually ends up being worse.

Hmmm.
From my limited experience, I would have to say that Picnic Day is always a foul time to go anywhere near Davis. This year it was April 18th. Likely there was a fair amount of "break down" going on on Sunday.
As to general congestion on I-80, along the Fairfield to Sacramento corridor, anywhere people can see other people driving, they slow down. Generally, this does not occur much, so people "freak" when they can see a line of car in the distance. This happens in Fairfield with the gentle bend in the road and elevation, again in on the west side of Vacaville, and on either side of the causeway. I think it's just human nature.
Additionally, the traffic going back to the bay area/sf is always bad on Sunday afternoon/night. Always been that way, always will. Just alot of people wanting to get out of the city and bay.
Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, on the 18th I went to Napa with my Mom and Fiance from Sacramento and the traffic was horrible around Davis. Easily added 30-45 mins to the drive due to stop and go on the freeway.
