I lived in midtown for years until 2003 when I moved out of state. If I was going to relocate back to Sacramento I would live in the midtown area myself. There is crime, but pretty much any big city has a criminal element. While in midtown my car was broken into and my radio was swiped several times and a neighbor of mine was stabbed in the alley by a homeless person as he was getting out of his vehicle. Midtown also has a gang problem. It's a very diverse area and just about every ethnic group down there has a gang.
But if you mind your own business for the most part you should have no problems. If I were you because you already live in Northern California I'd rent a hotel room in Sacramento for a weekend and look around the midtown area. Sacramento does have a lot of homeless in the midtown area because of the soup kitchen down there that serves 2500 meals a day. Many of the better apartments in Sacramento are not the typical apartment house type rental. There are a lot of old Victorian type homes that have been cut up into apartments. And many apartments for rent don't make the local paper so just drive around in the midtown area and look for the FOR RENT signs.

All in all if I was going to move back to Sacramento and rent I'd live in the midtown area. It has a lot to offer entertainment wise and if you take the time to look around you can find a nice apartment a whole lot cheaper than you could in the bay area.

For us non-natives, where is the soup kitchen in Midtown? (No, I'm not looking for a meal - I just want to know where to steer away from when looking for potential places to live!)

Most of the "soup kitchens" are in the North C Street and 12th Street (AKA Hwy120) area just north of the downtown grid. The homeless tend to mill around in the Alkali Flats area which is quite a few blocks north and west of the Midtown area. There are homeless encampments all along the American River greenbelts which is north of Midtown. As in most large cities, the homeless will come into the city areas to pan handle and look for food. Alleys are a favorite area for the homeless to hang out since it's off the main roads away from law enforcement. (All the city blocks from C St. to W St. and from Front St. to 29th St. have an alley running west to east through the block.) The homeless also hang out at some of the small city parks. PD has a "wagon" and will come through at request of business owners and citizens for pickup to "dry out". Of course, that would only be for the homeless who are under the influence. As a Sacramento City Firefighter, my experience of the Midtown area is it's a strong business and living community who tend to look out for each other and try to keep the area as "cleaned up" as possible. I personally live closer to UCDavis Medical Center (Okay! On Y street, north boundary to Oak Park!) and love the Midtown area. BTW, alot of Oak Park is a bad choice to live, but areas of Y St, 1st Ave, 2nd Ave and 3rd Ave are really coming around. Older, quaint bungalows being picked up at reasonable prices and fixed up by first time home owners.
Overall, I think downtown Sacramento and the Midtown area have really become quite "cosmopolitan" during my 25 years living and working here. Welcome, come stay for a couple days to home shop and good luck with your relocation!

Thank you! That was helpful indeed. Midtown sounds like my kind of place, as I'd most likely be working at either UCD Medical Center or Sutter.

My tickets are purchased and I'll be there 6/28 - 7/4.

My daughter is in Sacramento, she calls her 2 bedroom duplex, her ghetto-fabulous place, for $1000.00 a month, it's in Fair Oaks. Also they rented a house that would sell for $300,000.00 for $1100.00 a month, also in Fair Oaks. She thnks it's very expensive there, but the wages are also higher.

When I look on Craigslist for Midtown rentals, it appears most of them are managed by a Whisler company. Are they the owners, or just property managers? Also, can anyone speak to their reputation?
