It depends on what kind of coverage you want. If you are on a tight budget you can get liability only coverage (meaning no collison or comprehensive coverage) -- this is the cheapest and is the minimum state requirement. This will cover you if cause damage to another vehicle and/or property. The problem is that this will not cover your car if there is damages. If the other party is at fault, you would have to go through their insurance company. You can also opt for liability only coverage with a UMPD endorsement. Meaning, if the person that hits you is at fault, and does not have insurance, your Uninsured Motorist Property Damage coverage will kick in. Keep in mind there are limits here as well, usually about 3,500 that your insurance company will pay for your damages. If you're hurt, you can also opt for UMBI or UNBI (uninsured or under insured bodily injury) which can help pay for your injuries if you are not found at fault and the other party is uninsured or does not have enough insurance (i.e., limits issue with their policy).
I would recommend checking in the Sunday paper, internet search, or especially the classifieds in the News and Review for smaller carriers that can give you this coverage for a good deal.
Hope this helps.

If you have a good driving record (no violations, no accidents), the best place in California by far is Wawanesa.
