Ha! I think they also said liberal areas. Rosemont is about as liberal as Crawford, Texas.

Midtown would be your best bet. I call it Little Portland. I'm a liberal myself, but I avoid the place. I've always felt more should have been done for the lifelong residents there instead of pricing them out. But believe me, if your'e looking for an SF/Portland style liberal area of sacramento, mid town is it.

Thanks everyone

I guess it sounded like I was putting Sacramento down before giving it a chance... but I didn't mean to criticize. Turns out I will be moving there, and although I don't think it's my dream city, I'm excited about it and will definitely give it a chance...

Oh, and regarding Rosemont, that's where I'll be working, so I asked about it specifically (regardless of it being liberal or not). No... Rosemont doesn't look like my ideal neighborhood...

Sacramento is one of those places that takes a while to get to know. From what I have seen, Midtown rents are dropping rather rapidly. Studios were creeping up towards $750 a month a few years ago during the real estate boom, now I see 1-bedrooms for like $600--not as cheap as the early 1990s when you could get a studio for like $300 or a cool Victorian flat for $450, but cheap enough where maybe the students and musicians will stop moving to Oak Park. That, plus Midtown is a lot less dangerous than it was back when it was cheap (and those of you who think it's dangerous now either weren't here 20 years ago or don't remember it.) And no, it ain't frickin' Manhattan or even downtown Portland, but it's a pretty neat place that should fill most of your needs while still making a lightrail/bike trip to your job in Rosemont feasible.

Both Elmhurst and Tahoe Park are much closer to Rosemont. If you wanted to, you could probably ride your bike from those neighborhoods to Rosemont. If you move to midtown, you pretty much make yourself dependent on either mass transit or a car.

I recently discovered that when you're looking for homes on trulia.com, there's a tool on the left side of the screen where you can narrow down which neighborhood you want to look at within the city you're searching. So even if you aren't looking to buy, you could find out the names of the neighborhoods by just clicking and unclicking them with that tool. The one(s) you choose will appear on the resulting map with a shaded red overlay.

If we're getting down to micro Neighborhoods check out Newton Booth/ Alhambra Triangle, where I live/have lived. I like it, because it's close to action but not right in it, close to light rail and close to the freeways as I commute to the suburbs. Since you'll be heading to Rosemont, you'll appreciate the 10 min you shave off the commute each way than if you lived in Midtown proper, plus light rail is right there. Also parking is a dream, never any problem finding a place in front of one's house. It's pretty light on business but the Co-op is great to have and there are some hidden gems, like the brand new Temple Coffee. Also it's closer to some cool non-Midtown stuff like Broadway and East Sac.

Where is midtown on the Sacramento maps? I've yet to clearly define or locate that area.

Also, a mini-Portland? So it is quite a bit smaller than PDX?

How would you compare it to PDX? In what way? Many bookstores? Many coffee shops for people to hangout at? Etc.?
