Default Thinking of moving to sacramento

Ok ..i'm seriously looking to make a move to CA somewhere in the Sacramento area. I like to have a stable ground beneath my feet so let me get to my main concern...how close is this place to the San-Andreas fault line?

I've only been to CA once (LA for a week) and experience my fisrt tremor ..it made CNN news ...so please don't think I'm paranoid.

Default Quakes

You are safe here, but don't just take anyone's word for something so important.

To verify the low risks ask insurance agents how much earthquake insurance cost in Sacramento vs Contra Costa or Alameda counties.

I lived in LA - I lived in Sacramento

TWO UTTERLY DIFFERENT CITIES AND AREAS

Different climates, different jobs, different houses, different ways of life. Most people in California know - that California could be two seperate states (Northern Calif & Southern Calif), because one does not even feel connected to the other

In my ten years in Sac - I think there was an earthquake once and it was HARDLY felt - only my experience with earthquakes in Southern Calif was able to detect it

MAYBE.... just maybe... when "the big one" comes to San Francisco, Sacramentans will be able to feel it just slightly, but other than that, no problem. The bigger problem is flooding for the folks that live by the levees.

Sacramento is really safe from earthquakes. I can only remember one very slight one over the course of 20 years. But new fault lines are discovered in California all the time. Usually after an earthquake destroys some property.

Thanks for the response. Atlanta has had the number 1 or 2 busiest airport in the country and the 3rd worse traffic. I read many complaints about Sacramento traffic and at first it kind got me wondering ...but I guess ..everything is relative ...right? I mean you guys don't make a 30 mile commute everyday without getting out of first gear ..do you?

One thing I actually like hearing so far is the weather ...burn-baby-burn ...I love the heat! The dry heat I hear about in Arizona ofcourse is better than the soupy stuff we get out here ...but any heat is better than feeling cold ..I hate the cold especially prolong cold!

And after moving to Atlanta from NY ..I find things getting a bit crowded here for me ...so if SA is really a cow town ..quite..with modest shopping/resturants ..that would be ok. Especially if there are parks water fronts etc.

The one thing that I'm sure would not be nice is being taxed through the wazoo in CA!

Oh and by the way .. I saw where only about 50% of the residents are native born Americans there ...where are the other 50% from?

There was a study (I read in the Sac bee a few years back)

That said by 2010 the majority (over 40 or 45%) of Califronia population will be Latino - that's the majority of the 50% you are looking for

I am no expert, but im sure traffic in sacramento is much less than atlanta.

Sacramento has excellent weather, no humidity. There are about 3 months in the summer where it is VERY hot, but the other 9 months are very nice.

I dont know if sacramento is a cowtown, but it is very suburban. There is decent shopping, but it is mostly in shopping centers, unless you go to midtown or east sac.

I've lived in Citrus Heights, a suburb of Sacramento, for over 18 years and I've never felt an earthquake since moving there. Prior to that, from 1977 to 1988, I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area and I felt many earthquakes while there. The Sacramento area has experienced far fewer earthquakes than other parts of the state, but that does not mean that we won't have a major earthquake. It is possible just about anywhere, even in other states.

I've lived in Sacramento and the immediate area for 40 years and have never experienced an earthquake. I was in the parking lot at the college when the Loma Prieta earthquake hit San Francisco and all of the car alarms went off. But no damage. Sacramento has not had an earthquake in recorded history. There have been earthquakes in areas around Sac. such as Oroville, San Francisco, Coalinga (not real close).

The population of Sacramento combined with surrounding areas is about 2 million people. Only LA could call a city of 2 million a "cow town." As long as your income is enough to live in CA, I think you will like Sacramento and you won't have to invest in museum wax to hold down your glassware in an earthquake.
