Thanks to everyone but Majin for their insight. Nothing is set now for me I am just weighing options of better pay in the Bay Area. Thanks for the personal accounts of trips there.

I have a neighbor that does the commute. She says she used a van pool. She gets up at 4 in the morning and then sleep in the van. I still think she is crazy to do it.

Flying from Sacramento to SF would take just about as long: downtown to Sac Metro on shuttle or bus, waiting in security line, then commuting from SFO to downtown San Francisco--taking the train would be faster!

Taking the train and BART would be the only way I would do it. Nap, catch up on work or read that book you've been wanting to get after. Heck, learn a foreign language or two(or add to your repertoire if you already have a couple)... I commuted from Roseville to Antioch for six months once. That was about my limit. And that was almost certainly NOTHING compared to what it would be like to go all the way into SF every day. The morning was smooth sailing but I caught the beginnings of rush hour on the way home in a few spots after coming off of Levee Road.
Oh I almost forgot... I was acquainted with six or seven guys who all work down there that rent a van and take turns driving the group.

Cool Sacramento-San Fran Commute option

I'd say

Take the I-5 S to exit 498
Twin Cities Rd.
Follow Twin Cities Rd. West
(R off the Ramp)
at the "T" intersection with River Rd turn L onto River Rd to
Walnut Grove and Locke.
Turn L at the "T" with US 160
Follow 160 W aka Victory Highway to route 4 W to
Pittsburg CA (John Muir PKWY)
Exit onto 242 S through Concord
which hooks up with 680 S
and then exit onto 24 West (grove shafter expressway)
follow 24 W to 580 W to the ramp for the Bay Bridge across to San Fran and exit off Harrison St.

to 80 (Bay Bridge) into San Fransisco

follow along in Googlemaps

Cool Bart train from Pittsburg CA

You can get the BART train to Embarcadero Station from Pittsburg which would cut your commute time

BART - Station List

then connect to Light rail or hail a cab or something to front St.?
