My husband and I are looking for a place to retire within an hour or 2 of Davis/Sacramento where our daughter lives. We'd definitely like to have some snow in the winter and, if possible, summers that are cooler than the 90s. We like the idea of a small town with friendly people, but not overpriced and overrun by tourists. We would appreciate any suggestions.

You might look at communities in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, like Auburn, Grass Valley, Nevada City, Paradise, Placerville, or Shingle Springs. Summers under 90 is a tall order in California, even in the Bay Area, but our summers are dry, and generally temps in the 90s in a dry climate are more comfortable than summers in the 70s/80s in more humid parts of the country.

I'd probably go with the Grass Valley and Nevada City area.
