Sacramento CA is like a 'Midwest' city in CA. True or False?
Sacramento CA is like a 'Midwest' city (IL, MI, OH, MN, etc.) in CA. True or False?
I've heard posters make the reference...just thought I'd throw out a poll and get a vote on this...
Why or why doesn't someone believe this?

Somewhat like a Midwest city in the Land Park and East Sacramento areas.
I'd say that the other areas, such as Carmichael, Fair Oaks, Roseville, Folsom and Arden Arcade aren't much like the Midwest.

True, but it's a California sort of Midwest. Surrounded by agricultural areas, surrounding areas quite conservative with a more-liberal core area, yeah, pretty much.

ok, if you look at it that way, I would agree, but living where I do and living in Sac area in the past, I see very little resemblance. I voted false, maybe I should have thought about it the way you are. If I had I would say true.

Sort of. There are many things that sac has that are comparable to the midwest.
Larger homes on larger lots and affordable housing stock for starters
The flat nature of the valley
Large swaths of the city proper declining in favor of suburbs
Agricultural heritage and rural setting
Large amount of people from the south and midwest

In many ways I do think Sacramento resembles the midwest, especially in terms oif topography. However, that's where the resemblance ends in my estimation. In terms of culture it's far more cosmopolitan and diverse and I don't find it as welcoming.
As always, just one man's opinion.

I grew up in Michigan. Sac is the antithesis of a midwestcity. Try spending just one day in Detroit and you will think that Sac is OZ.

That assumes that Detroit is the archetypal Midwestern city. Some might argue against that.
I suppose there are climate differences too: unlike the Midwest, Sacramento winters are warm (that is, not freezing) and rainy, while our summers are hot and dry instead of humid and rainy. There are the obvious cultural differences: California as a whole is a culturally diverse place, and that is reflected in Sacramento's population, and as Curmudgeon mentioned, more cosmopolitan. Now, its level of cosmopolitan-ness may pale in comparison to Los Angeles and San Francisco, but when compared to Kansas City or Green Bay we might seem downright erudite.

Detroit is more Rust belt than midwest. Its in the eastern time zone even. When I think of typical midwestern city I think Kansas City, St Louis, Chicago, Milwaukee, and to a lesser extent Minneapolis. And you would be surprised how non white some places in the midwest are. Chicago has a ton of mexicans, the only city with more is LA.
