Drive along Hwy 49 between Placerville down to Jamestown and visit the small towns along the way. Lots of antique shops along the way. California Hwy 49 Gold Rush Country Mother Lode Business Shopping Restaurant Real Estate Lodging. Visit Jamestown for www.railtown1897.org. There are alot of wineries in the area. Also visit one of the caves in the area Caves in the Sierra Nevada Foothills

There's also Indian casinos near Jackson and Tuolumne.

If you have never been, Yosemite is a must.

Depending on the length of your trip, definitely start at some place like Placerville and work your way south to Yosemite. If you have time venture east off of 49 to towns like Volcano, Fiddletown, Murphys.

What time of year are you going? Fall is prime time in El Dorado County, with lots of apple farms and craft places in "Apple Hill" in Camino (just east of Placerville). Placerville is a neat little town, and Marshall Gold Discovery Park in Coloma is where James Marshall discovered gold at Sutter's Mill which triggered the gold rush. Great walking, hiking, sightseeing. East of Camino is Eldorado National Forest, if you are craving some pine trees. For fishing / meadows/ streams, my family loves the area around Wrights Lake, and Icehouse Reservoir area. It's getting pretty chilly up there at night, now. But there should be great fall foliage. Have fun!

I don't know what the time frame is for this trip, but the Brandywine Maples in Grass Valley and Nevada City normally are changing color this time of year.

If you are looking for a short day trip, Nevada City is pretty close. you can go up hit the Empire Mine and possibly hit Friar Tucks or get pasties at Marshalls Pasties its on Mill Street in Grass Valley.

Nevada City - Fall Colors

Empire Mine State Historic Park

If you have more time I thought the drive to Downieville on 65 was very pretty and Downieville was another cool old mining town that was pretty to walk around in.
