Hi All. Newbiee here.
I just landed a job in Modest but do not want to live there due to all the negative stories. After doing much research about crime stats, high school with IB program and soccer, I am leaning towards Tracy. Can someone weigh in, in terms of crime, school, housing, etc. I am thinking traffic wouldn't be that bad because I am going against it.
Any help would be nice.

I would look into Ripon which is just north of Modesto. It is a nice small town. If you go out into the foothills a little more I would look into Oakdale. Tracy is not that bad but it is a lot bigger of a city than the other two I mentioned. I think you can get a pretty good deal in Tracy right now on houses.

There are plenty of places in and around Modesto where you shouldn't have any problems.

I'd advise you to take a look at Modesto before writing it off, especially the northwest side of the area.

I'm not sure where you are coming from, but I personally wouldn't want to live in modesto. There are some really nice areas- but being new to the area you probably won't know where they are as while some have nice curb appeal they are next to the ghetto, so the looks can be a bit deceiving. I would recommend talking to someone at the police department to find out some good locations- OR, try renting on a short term lease to get a feel for the area.
If you have decided to comtinue to keep it on your "not an option" list, Turlock is nice with the options you have. It sort of has that "small town" feel to it, and it is only like 15 minutes from Modesto. Again, there are areas to avoid, but the thugs are not as bad as the Modesto thugs....still crime though....but that is pretty much everywhere. I would check out Turlock, or Escalon personally. Riverbank is nice too. Areas to completely avoid? I would add Keyes and Empire to that list....you don't want to live in either of those (just in case you see them on the map and are curious about them).

Good luck!

Modesto overall crime index for 2008 was 470.2, while Sacramento was 545.9 and Turlock was 430.3.

Looks like Modesto isn't that bad.

Thanks to all who replied. I am leaning towards Tracy, based solely on the crime index (below 200), high school with IB program and descent local club soccer team. I guess I have to spend some time living in the city in order to figure out which areas are better than others. Please feel free to comment on the city of Tracy and it will be well appreciated.
Happy Holidays to all.
