Default Relocating to Placerville Area

My family (husband, me, 7 month old baby, and medium sized angelic golden retreiver mix-40lb dog) are relocating from Houston, TX to Placerville or surrounding area in January. We are looking for a house to rent- 2 bedrooms ok, 3 is better with a nice kitchen. We think we would like to be close to downtown Placerville but have never been to the area. My husband is coming out January 4th through the 8th to find us a rental. Does anyone have any advice on the area or possible rentals? I like to walk the baby/dog every day and would like to be somewhere safe and pedestrian friendly. Any advice would be much appreciated- we were orginally looking at Pollock as well, but we really don't know much about the area.

Well, do you like to walk in a town setting or a rural setting? Close to downtown Placerville can have some cute LITTLE places, but be careful of sketchy areas. Lots of nice areas around...it depends on what you want. Are you working in Placerville, or Folsom, or Sacramento? Do you want historic, country, or newer and suburban? Pines and snow, or rolling hills with oaks? Tiny yard, tract home yard, or acreage?

Here's the local paper:

I have never rented a house up here so I can't recommend a property manager or real estate agent (I do know some to avoid, however).

Tell us some more about what you think you might want and we will try to help.

My husband's office will be in Gold River but he travels for work so much it almost doesn't matter. He only goes to the office once or twice a week. I like walking in wooded areas but have concerns about safety. I would like to have sidewalks for walking with the stroller and dog. The cute historic homes near main street in Placerville look nice, but are there areas to avoid? I would love a fenced area in the yard to let the dog out without having to go out myself.

Placerville is a nice area... but too much traffic for me. Everyone going to Tahoe HAS to go through Placerville... I'd personally recommend finding something in Gold River.. not only will you get rid of the horrible commute (it just isnt a commute.. it is a bad one!), but Gold River is pretty nice itself. There is a large selection of property.. from small to large.. from exclusive to busy... you'll find a nice house there.

Gold River is an excellent idea. The schools are excellent.

Gold River is pretty nice and even if you want more towards the foothills Folsom and El Dorado Hills are also nice. It depends on what you are looking for and all three have good schools.

We moved to Placerville just before Christmas (from florida) with our daughter and our dog. We found a nice rental just out of the main downtown area and we love it. Its like anywhere else,if your hubby has time to check out the area he should be able to work out which are 'nice' and which are 'shady'. Rentals can be small as someone mentioned, however our place and numerous rentals ive looked at are about 1400 sq ft living area (then theres a basement for storage).. so they are out there. Lots of places to walk, plenty of trails. Walking into town is easily done, plenty of sidewalks. Cross walks over the freeway make town access easy. True 50 can get busy but the town has stop lights which slows traffic down (and also means you can get onto 50 without taking your life in your hands). We opted for out of the main town because we like to be a little more secluded, yet everything is really close by.

In Placerville, you want to avoid the "Upper Broadway" area near the Grocery Outlet. That's where the local homeless/meth addicts hang out. If you ever end up buying a home in the area, I'd NOT recommend Placerville Union school district....because it draws from some of the lower socio-economic areas, with the related problems. Mother Lode Union, Gold Trail Union, Buckeye Union are MUCH better!!

Good luck and welcome to the area!

Oh - sidewalks. Only the "urban" areas have sidewalks - downtown Placerville, El Dorado Hills. Not in any of the other areas, except for newer tract homes in Cameron Park. That's about it for El Dorado County. Folsom and west has plenty of sidewalks and bike paths.
