A friend has been asking me what a $150K income will get for a family of 3 in Sacramento. I told him I don't know since I am from LA and am not really familiar with Sac. Is this a comfortable income for my friend, his wife, and a 10 year old daughter? Will it get them into some desirable areas?

$150K is pretty comfortable for Sacramento. Median family income is around $55,000. The money flows east: median income in Roseville or Folsom is closer to $80-100,000 a year, $120-130,000 in Granite Bay or El Dorado Hills.

With an income of $150k, you should pretty much be able to live anywhere you want in this region. You probably would have money left over to spend on buying a cabin up in the Sierras to use in the summertime to get out of the heat or to stay at when skiing during the winter time.

Yeah, $150k will do it. Tell him to look in Roseville, Mid-town, Folsom or Fair Oaks. It will depend on where he works and how much driving he can tolerate.

Yep, I concur. I think they will be able to live very nicely. There are plenty of nice neighborhoods they could afford. It all depends on where they work and what they want.

Wow, not trying to be mean or anything like that but if I made 150k per year I wouldn't even question what areas I could live in, especially in an area like Sacramento. Plain and simple you can afford to live wherever you want in placer, el dorado, or sacramento counties. And this will be comfortable living too. Spacious home, garage, new(er) cars, vacations, fine restaurants, high end groceries, boat for folsom or yaht, etc, etc.

Thanks. The friend is from Chicago, is an internist and works for our group but has decided to relocate.

150k in Sac is very comfortable. However, a yaht is not going to happen - Sac isn't that cheap!! My husband and I have a combined income of 150k and live in a nice neighborhood, nice house, good schools and we can afford to do some things, but we do not have a yaht or a vacation cabin in the Sierra Nevadas! I think people need to remember that when you make 150k you are taxed LIKE CRAZY, and you don't end up with anywhere near what you are actuall making....Anyway, we moved from NYC, so tell him his money will go futher here than in Chicago!

An income of 150K should provide your friend with a very comfortable lifestyle in the Sacramento area. Probably not a cabin on Lake Tahoe, but certainly enough for a nice hotel room for skiing or hiking trips.

Here is a website to check out home prices.

Good luck!
