My husband and I are going to be heading to OR in the next couple of years and I've been hitting the city-data forums like crazy. :-D My question doesn't seem to be answered elsewhere, but I'd like yard space that will allow for gardening AND children AND dogs. A little patch isn't going to cut it. Is there an area of town where you can get a solid half acre at a reasonable price without a mini-mansion sitting on top of it? I should mention, my dogs are Anatolian Shepherds, a giant, if lazy, breed. It's not that they need space to race around, but romping is a favorite pastime.

Looking to buy or rent? I'd use a real estate search engine to find listings that fit your parameters. (RMLS) What you described could be found in south Salem. I have not heard too many HOA horror stories from Oregon. I am interested to see what any locals have to say.

MY familiarity with Salem is anecdotal at best as I only visited regularly and never lived there. I know I did not care for the congestion on some of the major roads.

There is no "Area". It is mixed. You can find 10 foot spacing between tri-levels right next to acreage sized lots all over the city and everything in between. Your needs will be meet by searching for those specifications.
