If we wanted to retire in Oregon but not Eugene or Portland where would be the best places? Would prefer the politics on the progressive side. Only other places we've considered are NM or possibly Wa.

The only progressive city would be Corvallis. Salem is moderate.

If you want liberal politics, you are pretty much limited to Portland, Eugene, and Ashland.

Everybody is broke, so you aren't going to find anywhere spending a huge amount of money on programs that you might consider to be important. There is no money available to spend.

I second Corvallis. Possibly the most liberal city government in the State. You'd have to go to Arcata, CA to find a more liberal one!

I don't know much about it, but Hood River may be another choice. People can chime in and correct me if I'm way off base.

I wondered about Corvallis would it be too much of a college town? Is there life other than the school. It doesn't have to be over the top liberal but at least lean in that direction as opposed to being solidly conservative. I realize every town is having to cut back on services but the people who live there still project an open attitude to diversity, support public education, arts, etc. Eugene probably comes closest but was thinking smaller. At the moment we are outside town of 2,500 but less than half hour from Asheville a libersl bastion in conservative NC.

Portland Area or Eugene. There are really no other "Leaning" areas of the state.

I don't think so, but that is a subjective question. I think Corvallis has a solid identity outside of the university.

By chance my son is heading to Corvallis in two weeks so will ask him his take on the city. He was born in Albany and spent his first year in Brownsville has never been out there since so he is interested to see where his life got started. We keep telling him it is one of our favorite places! So if we went back might have to settle for a moderate town. I could probably live with it as long as not all conservative a little diversity good
