Personally, I'd give it a pass until they get their community in order.
"The only way this gets any better is if we go to voters and ask for another levy to be passed. I'm telling you as sheriff of this county, that the county has not mismanaged one dollar. There's just no money in the budget," said Wolfe.

Looking at the very low tax rate for Polk County, I can believe the sheriff. It's the voters' fault: http://media.oregonlive.com/pacific-...0f9c08be21.jpg

Always good to review the budgets, plans and actual services of the counties and specific communities of interest when planning to relocate... Things always trickle downhill, so the local resources must determine how best to handle the shortfalls from reduced revenue streams above... How your community handles it, the economic trends developing (national, state, local), and decisions made by the officials and voters in those locales that will affect future years should help shape the picture of where you want to live. If a county reduces patrol staff to 4, working reduced 10-hour daily shifts, and can't afford to man emergency com centers, guess who picks up the slack for your town/neighborhood services... How is that working for you... Get involved, make a difference, watch for changes, and determine if you like what you see - or not.

Wow,I guess old City Data Forum threads never die. I happened to look at this one today, out of curiosity. I started this thread over a year ago, 8-8-13.
I decided to move to Vancouver WA instead of Salem. Salem is nice, but I found Vancouver to be better: still close to the mountains and ocean but no state income tax in WA, no sales tax across the river in nearby Portland; all the advantages of a mid-size city with the advantages of a big city 15 minutes away (off-commute times).

Just as soon as I can.

Actually Dallas doesn't need a lot of fixing when compared to many cities. And the county Sheriff's issues are not Dallas issues. Dallas has a solid Police Force.

I lived in Salem for 10 years, and my experience there was not good....I lived in the Lake Labish area...and worked on Lancaster Drive and Portland Road, both not very good areas.....LOTS of crime,LOTS and LOTS of drugs and addicts...and a gang problem.I was robbed at gunpoint at my job and burglarized at my home THREE times...granted,I got into and around a lousy crowd and sleazy business, but not the place for me to live or retire...I'm now living in the California Sierras' in a tiny town and loving it.

Default salem sucks

I may have not lived anywhere but Salem for my 36 years but I wish I had left before I was stuck at a dead end job paying 900 a month for a s**t hole apartment and can't afford to move. I love fishing and the outdoors but everywhere I go in and around Salem looks like a trash dump, and even when I overlook that I get treated like the scum that is trashing the city by police who only want to hand out tickets not make Salem a better place, I mean really? I have a fishing pole not a tent in my hand. I can't even count how many times I have been hassled by the Salem PD while fishing and they were more concerned about finding contraband than fishing licenses. And don't even get me started on retarded drivers, don't they require the elderly to retest at some point? And why is it not illegal to do 10 mph under, but when I pass them safely and at the speed limit I get pulled over and told its not impeding unless on a highway? If I cannot do the posted speed than the person in the way is impeding . so I guess I'm saying Salem is not as bad as some city's but you won't catch me in ANY of those citys EVER! I hope to some day haul a** north right past s**t hole Portland and not stop untill I'm 500 miles or more from the tweeker losers I grew up with here and the California values being forced on us here you all can have it, just my opinon
