Hi,

We are a family of 5 from Arizona. My wife and I and three daughters ages 9, 4, and 2. We are looking at relocating to the Salem area in November due to possible job relocation.

We have a household income of roughly $45,000 - $50,000 and are looking to start off in an apartment. Possible rent up to $1,000 for a three bedroom.

Looking for any advice on best parts of Salem to live in with low crime rate, and good schools.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

West/south are, broadly speaking, considered the most favorable, though as a realtor Silverfall can give you the best perspective on specific neighborhoods in terms of school district/crime.

Rental market is tight right now, alas. So you may have to consider getting in something just for year 1 that may be a compromise on price or location, and then looking at trying to find something better for year 2.

West Salem is 97304. South Salem is 97302 and 97306.

Crime is relative and subjective. You can see monthly crime data on crimereports.com. Salem PD puts crimes up there. Most people regard south and west as safe places to live with good schools. The biggest issue you will have is finding a rental. The rental market is very tight right now so you likely won't have many choices in these areas.

Are there smaller towns up to 20 miles out of Salem that are safe to live in?

Depends on what part of Salem you're traveling to, but Dallas on the west side, and Silverton on the east. If you were commuting to the Chemeketa part of Salem you could commute form somewhere like Mt. Angel.

I would assume Stayton or Independence/Monmouth are both safe, though I've never looked at stats.

I'd stay away from Dallas and its surrounding small communities for now. Statistically, that area is fairly safe, but they only have part-time police protection due to budget cuts. There have been many instances of callers to 911 not being able to get an officer to come to their house.

I feel safe in all of the small towns around Salem. Safe is a subjective term though.

Hi, thank you for all of the replies...so far everything has been accurate about Salem it definately seems like a tighter market right now....Luckily we have a couple of months, but I have put quite a few feelers out there for apartments with 3 bedrooms.

Any suggestions on things to do in Salem with 3 little girls ages 9, 4, and 2?

Thank you
