Hello,
I'm currently looking for a small house to rent in the Salem area (or the Dallas/Independence area as well). I was just wondering if anyone had some insights on how the rental market is right now, or if anyone has any suggestions about places to look at, right now I'm not finding much. I'd like to stay under $1,200, but it doesn't have to be a big place. Another complication is that I have a puppy right now and it seems like a lot of places aren't too keen on them. I just thought I would put this out there and see if anything comes up. Thanks!

I think you're going to have a hard time finding a house within your budget. Not to mention pet-friendly. Oregon seems to be anti-pet when it comes to the rental market. I went through the same thing a few years ago and ended up purchasing a manufactured home in a park that allows pets. If you can get approved for a loan your mortgage and space rent would likely be equivalent to your rental budget. Best of luck.

I don't have a pet, so not sure about that.

Thank you for the responses. Did you end up renting with Northwest Pacific Property Management? How was the experience? I saw that they have terrible reviews online so I've been hesitant to consider their properties.

Yes, I rented from them (1 br unit in a small apartment complex). They maintained the complex pretty well and I only called for a repair one time. Another rental agency took over the complex a few months after I got there so everything was transferred to the new company.

A lot of landlords advertise on craigslist and there is a rental section on zillow. If you Google for property management companies in Salem, you will find some companies that manage rentals.

I'm always puzzled by tenants who know they will be moving and think that right before they move is a great time to get a new puppy. Maybe if your landlord where you are living now is tickled pink that you have a new puppy, you might consider staying where you are at until the dog is over one year old. Many landlords don't allow dogs and no landlord is going to allow a puppy that is still piddling and chewing.

The only way you could have made your rental prospects worse is if your new puppy is a pitbull.
