The whole town seems like a cultural wasteland. Eugene, Portland, Corvallis, even ALBANY has more to do. You have to travel 5 miles to get anywhere you need to go, there's no large natural areas near the city, it's just an ugly place out in the middle of the plains.

Admittedly, Portland and Eugene-Springfield are much larger, but there's more to do in Corvallis and Albany than Salem? I guess it depends on what a person is looking for. Why is Salem such an ugly place? Just curious, but do you live in Salem?

Can you give some examples of what there is to do in other cities, especially Corvallis & Albany, that you can't do in Salem?

Does Silver Falls not count as a large natural area near the city?

Mimzy, most 18 year olds think they city the grew up in sucks. Part of being 18.

Corvallis has OSU so they will have a youthful culture because of that.

P.S. If you think traveling 5 miles to get where you want to go is bad, I suggest you avoid major cities. Salem is a piece of cake in that regard.

Have you been to Minto Brown Island Park? It's a beautiful park that doesn't look like a "city park" and is along the river. I don't think Salem sucks, but then I have lived other places and have more perspective than others.

If I have a complaint about Salem, it is that the city planners didn't do a very good job regarding future planning. I have lived here 30 years and the street systems cannot handle the amount of people who have moved here. There is a bottle neck during commute to get over the bridge, which can be maddening. Once a couple of summers ago, some guy was on the bridge, threatening to jump. Well, that shut down the entire city for about 6 or 7 hours! Nobody could get home!!

Salem has the traffic problems it has not just because of city planners but, truthfully, because Salem residents want these problems. This is the problem throughout Oregon. Everyone b**ches about traffic, but they won't pay for new or expanded roads. Or they don't want new or expanded roads near them. The majority speaks and this is the result. Although I have to say we've had a lot of useless politicians who spent too much time listening to the car-hating, anti-freedom green zealots.

Yes Bob, you could be right. Oh a funny: Years ago someone actually marketed a board game about Salem's streets. It was called "You Can't Get There From Here"!
Oh well, in the next year or two I am going to live full time on a horrible bleak gray Oregon beach, where we DO NOT have sunny days all year long...it only rains...all the time. I repeat...we DO NOT (wink, wink) see sunny days and lots of partial sunny days in winter, fall, or spring.

And I'm leaving for Wilsonville because I can't stomach $400/month gas bills anymore to get to my job in Tualatin.

You're right, the Coast gets NO sunshine. Just like here in the Valley. The "sun" today is actually going to turn into a monsoon. Best get out my gondola.

Hilarious! I think I remember it. That was a long time ago. Maybe the 60s or 70s? Never actually saw it though. Thanks for the chuckle!
