You have to admit, if you have ever spent much time in Portland, that it is probably the better choice for the o.p.

No I didn't mean it to be offensive to you personally but a general opinion on my part about Salem. I guess my opinion is that a more educated population, generally speaking, isn't going to throw drink cans and such at people while screaming racial taunts. I remember on a previous post you had said something about living over by Lancaster so I'm pretty sure that you said it on here somewhere. That area is just a working class area for the most part. There are some fabulous folks over there that I have had as clients, but there is just some weirdness over there as well. While there are racists that are well educated for sure, my bias is that educated people tend to be more tolerant. I guess I think if you had lived down south that your experience here might have been a bit different. 22% of Salemites have bachelor degrees vs. Portland's 32%. I think education matters.

I lived in Portland for 10 years and now Salem for 10. Do I think that the OP would find Portland more comfortable. Maybe...since they have a more diverse population than we do here, but they have to decide what their priorities are. African-American's that move to Salem have to have a strong level of comfort being in a sea of white since our diversity comes from Hispanic and Asian populations. It is what it is. I'd love to see Salem more diverse, but obviously some other people think we are "flooded" already.

It wasn't my intention to be offensive and apologize if you thought I was inferring something about your person. It's hard to talk about racial issues on a forum since you can't hear my tone or see my body language.

I have apologized to Silverfall directly as my previous post was intended to be a DM! I quoted off the forum page only to get the formatting that a simple cut and paste wouldn't grab.

Boy, who would ever think Oregon could be so racially backwards...you would think a state that prides it'self as being so 'progressive' wouldn't be so paranoid about blcks or mexicans...

I'm from that area, sort of...above there...and now live in the warm south...to be honest with you...I think the south is less racist than those cold NW states...where their not use to seeing different people of all colors, faiths and styles...and when they do see or interact with them it's in very select controled enviornments...

I think I'd rather live in Missippi than Oregon...where at least down here people are truly use to diversity...Oregon only fakes, pretends, that their progressive...but in reality...I'd feel safer walking alone as a person of color...in Missippi...

If anyone thinks that the figures for Latino population in the Salem Metropolitan Area are 11% then I would suggest that the believer ease up on designer drug usage. If you as a Brother want to find a place where you will be an instant celeb for your marital status, it would be hard to say. However, the biggest thing going in Oregon is the state teat and as stated you would have a better chance getting something in Salem. I live in the 97301 zip code. I work for the state. I know coworkers in your category and they are doing fine. Do not avoid Salem because you feel that your family would be unwelcomed in any part of Salem. NE Salem is not that bad and South Salem is not all of that. Salem has problems and can be a hokie place but I am here to tell you that it can be beautiful and friendly. Good luck with your situation and your family.

I would advise Silverfall to look at census figures before she throws figures around. The 2010 Census officially counts Marion County as having 24.3% Hispanic population. The City of Salem itself rates at over 15%. The entire state of Oregon is 12%. Please, if you are a realtor please advise your clients properly. Additionally, be truthful to the facts.

The census hadn't even been done when I threw out that number. I pulled that number from the census guesstimate. Might want to check the date of a one year old post before you ream me for inaccuracies. I do appreciate that you think I am so smart that I can see 13 months into the future, when that article was written.

I, for one, am truly in awe of your powers, Silverfall.

Let me pass on something a Mexican friend of mine once told me: Hay buena gente y mala gente dondequiera que usted vaya. (There are good people and bad people wherever you go.) The challenge in life is sorting them out. Unfortunately, I see a lot of young people setting themselves up as victims because nobody ever explained the difference between prejudice and discernment. Some of the worst lowlifes have mastered the art of the friendly spiel. The tell is how they act. Once you know, they go into one of three socks: friends, acquaintances, or gone.
