I noticed that many posts consider Kearns an undesireable place to live. I have some job leads there, where would be a good place within 5 miles of Kearns to live? Is Kearns near the TRAX?
Thanks, Trebek |

TRAX is not in the general area of Kearns but they have Bus Lines all over the place that will take you to the nearest TRAX Stations.
Here is a link to the UTA TRAX website: Welcome to UTA |

West Jordan is adjacent to Kearns. It is fine to live in. Avoid the part of Kearns near 5400 S. and Bangerter Highway. The houses are old and run down, the businesses have bars on the doors and windows etc.
The part of Kearns directly adjacent to West Jordan -- near 5600 W. and 6400 S. -- seems nice enough – newer houses and businesses etc. There are also new luxury golf course houses being built around 5400 south and 5600 W. Judging from the size and location, I’d guess those homes are 400-500k. Newer parts of West Valley would also be a possibility from 4100 S. to 2100 S. and 5600 W. to 7200 W. The new homes there are a step above starter homes, so tend to be a bit nicer. Of course with either of those locales, you would have to deal with the name stigma, even if the houses and neighborhoods are nice. |

Thanks for the good info Coolcats and Cottonwood. No house buying plans, just a decent one or two bedroom apt. is all I need for the moment.

I second what coolcats said. Instead of living in Kearns, I would look a little west and north of there. Try looking along 5600 W or 7200 W between 2100 S and about 6200 S. There is a brand new rental community going in near 5600 W. and 3100 S in the new Highbury development. I don't know how far along they are in the building process, however. This is a good area that is still fairly close to where you want to be. You will also be close to shopping, restaraunts, freeway access, and bus routes that could take you to Trax. Good luck in your search.

I grew up in Kearns and went to Kearns High. DO NOT live in Kearns. It is now old, run down, and truly scary. Nearby towns of West Jordan, Taylorsville and some parts of West Valley City are OK. My parents live in West Jordan and my sister & niece live in Taylorsville and they are fine. You won't get to use TRAX to commute to Kearns, but do have UTA bus options. I'd try to stay south of 4700 So. and east of Bangerter Hwy. Lots of apartments on Redwood Road on bus lines.
Good luck! |

What about living near the intersection of W6200 S. and Bangerter? Decent areas? BTW: I have a decent car, but I love commuting by rail whenever possible, due to parking and traffic.
Actually I'd rather live in a smaller town like Ogden or Logan, but they are not hiring in my area of certification at the moment. Last edited by Trebek; 06-21-2007 at 10:32 AM. Reason: additional thought |

That area is around the Jordan Landing shopping center. It’s pretty good, but sort of busy and congested. Ogden doesn’t really have a small town feel, but some of the small towns around it do feel like, well small towns. Logan does have a small town feel.

Yeah Coolcats, the area looks good. I grew up in in place like this (Plano, Tx), it would be ok for a few years. The skiing is still close enough.

I would look into West Jordan, South Jordan, or Herriman if you want to live on the West Side. There are parts of Kearns that are okay, but most of it is run down. Other nice areas to consider are Riverton, Bluffdale, Sandy, and Draper, if you want to stay in Salt Lake County. If you don't mind about a 40 minute commute, you might want to consider North Utah County and the cities of Lehi, Alpine, Highland, Saratoga Springs, and Eagle Mountain.
