help me help me help me...lol relocating to salt lake area..never been there???
My family and I are considering a relocation from a very very small town in Ohio (pop 12,000) to the salt lake area. I have a 10 year old son who is very active in Hockey and in a gifted program at school..We are not Mormon..I am actually Pagan (solitary ecclectic witch) and my family is Not really anything Religiously speaking...so I guess my question is where would be a good place to start looking?? we dont care about the LDS stuff..people are people.but we want to make the transition painless on the kid which means he cant loses his hockey...we plan on renting and we have a dog and two cats.. we arent rich we are just working good ol' folks..lol well my hubby is a robot programmer he makes pretty good money..any ideas or suggestions....my kid is the main consern...we in general are kinda loners in the neighborhood now..and we dont hav any friends here..we hang as a family...

utah looks beautiful...but i am reading all the stuff on the net that is freaking me out a little...i mean the internet is painting utah as a NO FUN No Frills weird beer laws repressed kinda place...Now i Know this cant be completely true...so please for the love of the Moon help me out...lol

I would guess that you would feel most comfortable in Sugarhouse or maybe the Harvard-Yale area if you want something fancier. The schools can be a little scary. There are lots of Charters, which is always a bad sign.
My kids have gone to Carden memorial School (also in Sugarhouse). It is nondenomination Christian, though, but not terribly religious. It doesn't have a gifted program, but the classes tend to be quite challenging. I have a 10 and 11 year old, both gifted, and they have done really well there. It is a really excellent school, but quite strict, especially with uniforms. Not very expensive, though. About $4500 per year (cheap for private). They have no website.

not to concerned about upscale area we live currently in a small rural farm town we wouldnt be used to a stuffy upscale neighborhood we are just working folks....
most important thing to me is a hockey areana close by and a good school system..my son has been going to a montessori schol but it wasnt working out for him so we currently have him enrolled in our public schools but in a gifted program cause he is well above his grade level and has been playing violin for a few years now.. but he is really involved in hockey and so a school that offer high school hockey would be great...we have been researching the layton area but still dont have that much knowledge on it..and with the whole LDS thing I am not really concerned about it all cause we live surrounded by many different religions and i think spirtiual people are great..
my main concern is my son..who wont stop talking about snowboarding..lol

From what I've seen, hockey just isn't as big out here as it is in Ohio. I'm not sure what they have for teams for young kids up into the high school range. I do know that they're out there somewhere though because I have seen the jerseys. I'm from Minnesota originally and it has been different not seeing all sorts of little hockey teams and tournaments. Plus the Grizzlies are downright boring.

Oh good, I'm glad that you're finding rinks. I'm desperate for real hockey. I had to fly to Denver back in March to get a good hockey fix, and that was only to see my college team play.

We are moving in September, and my family and I are pagan as well. Actually the pagan stuff on witchvox seems good - my husband is more high magicky and I am a Dianic - and they actually have a group that incorporates both! AMAZING! All the Dianic's in Cali are anti male, lol
We are going through the same thing and I keep double guessing myself about the move. But we are looking to be moving in the city to start as my husband wil l be going to school
Good luck It looks nice!

May I suggest Portland,Seattle,SF,or Boulder?
IMO SLC is definitely not what you are looking for.
If hockey is huge, and you are bent on Utah,Park City has a new ice rink and some hockey play..maybe you could live in Oakley or Kamas--but both are very conservative.
Really really give this some thought ...unless you like moving
