I'm thinking of applying to transfer to a job in Salt Lake City ... I currently live on the east coast, but have an interest in visiting aging parents in Denver more often.

How expensive and annoying would it be to fly to Denver every other weekend ? Does the airport frequently close down due to ice/glaze ? Is flying out of Salt Lake hazardous in the winter due to ice/freezing fog/freezing drizzle?

Does anybody know anybody who does this ? Is it a feasable idea ?

Also, how painful is it dealing with the wintertime pollution ? Does it make people sick ? Do you just stay inside to keep out of the bad air for 3 months ?

Southwest has a lot of flights to Denver, don't know the price. Airport rarely closes as our winter, while cold, is very dry. Inversions can be bad but don't last more than a week usually. Search this forum for posts about inversions.

Southwest occasionally has fare sales and when they do, DEN-SLC flights start at $49 OW. Of course, the lowest fares are generally not available on Fridays and Sundays.

Knew somebody who did this for a long while. Got a job in SLC, but could not get his home sold in Colorado, so he traveled home almost every week end.
Did not seem to bother him at all.

Air quality in SLC ... Show me any place that does NOT have any, then go there and stay away from SLC !

Thanks. I couldn't rep you because I had earlier on another SLC thread. I've been reading threads on this forum. Good to hear that there isn't a lot of freezing fog and such affecting the airport. Also good to hear that particular inversions don't last too long. From Denver, I'm used to the brown cloud only lasting a couple days at a time at worst, so I know it'll be worse than that.

Choosing a random weekend in October, I found flights for $155-$300. That's a sizeable amount of money, but I think I could make it work, particularly on the low end. I'm sure it varies seasonally. I don't have a lot of personal expenses.

Thanks a lot for the info. Yeah, and hour and a half flight doesn't sound too bad.

I don't quite understand your second paragraph, however ... . I guess it means you don't like me. I guess my questions did sound whiny, and they're questions you hear all the time on this forum. I'm a little bit stressed over a number of things, and I didn't make the best of posts. My main question was about the airport, I should have left out the air quality stuff. I guess I am kind of a whiner and a worrier. It's not possible to like everybody.

But I do thank you very much for the info.

Also remember, for about $100 in gas, you can drive to and from Denver. You'd get there late on Friday if you leave around 5 but you'd have all day Saturday and could leave Sunday afternoon and still be home in time for the finish of Sunday Night Football.

With more than a week's notice, I've been flying between Phoenix and SLC for about $220 a trip. I have to believe you can find similar prices into Denver. I've flown a lot of US Airways but Southwest is similar in cost at least on the Phoenix flight.

Nope, not that way at all ...

What I meant was:
If you can find a place without bad air quality, live there, and do NOT *live* in SLC.
Then only travel from SLC to wherever ...
There ARE places with almost no bad air *higher up*

Heck, how much time would you spend around the airport anyway ???
I hope not for 3 months ....

Google maps estimates 8 hours for the drive. 536 miles. The way I drive it would definitely take me 8 hours to go 536 miles. We're talking about arriving at 1am on Friday night. That's pretty late. And then there's winter driving through Wyoming. It sounds like your times are a bit quicker than I drive.

No, I think for me I think I'd have to do the flights unless I were to stay in Denver for longer than just a weekend.

Well, work would be in the neighborhood of the airport. I'd prefer to live relatively near there (so Salt Lake City or towns north along the train line) so I could possibly commute without driving. Living higher up and having to drive into work every day doesn't sound as appealing. Besides, I probably can't afford to live in the mountains.

On other threads, it sounds like there are stretches of days at a time when the air in the whole Salt Lake City area is very bad, on par with the worst places in the country. While winters are bad with inversions, summers can have bad air days too with ozone. I've lived in places with good air quality all my life. Living in a place with unhealthy particulate levels would be a big adjustment for me, and is frankly my only concern about living in the area. On other threads people have said they are thinking about moving out just because of the air. I'm a hypochondriac, so I'm thinking this could be a problem. The good news is I worry most about diseases when they are communicable or destroy your looks (severe non-communicable skin problems). I'm a hypochondirac and I'm vain. Even though I'm no Tom Cruise.
