Actually, I knew about this guy already. I checked checked to see if he was actually on the list. He is from Iran. We have a number of kids on our block, so when I first heard about him, it really freaked me out. I was talking to the mother of a couple of the kids, though, and she told me he'd actually come over to talk to her and tell her his name was on the list. I'm not sure how he got on the list, but the mother he told indicated it was not something like pedophilia. After talking to him, she wasn't all that concerned. I'd probably be concerned regardless of what he did, but I guess she may know more than I do. Before we found out about his record, my husband actually played golf with him once and said he was a really nice guy. I'm just really not sure what to think.

It can be scary, but don't over-react. We tend to assume that people on the sex offender registry are all pedophiles and rapists. They aren't. Some were arrested for prostitution and some for soliciting. Some were arrested for underage consensual sex (known as the Romeo and Juliet offense). It's a pretty severe response to some of the crimes. And it's not even close to severe enough for other crimes. The point being that you can't make any assumptions.

And not all of the "sex crimes" on crime reporting websites are what you might think. Two kids caught making out in the back seat of a car can be arrested for lewd behavior which is considered a "sex crime" for the crime report website. My husband gets a weekly automated crime report for our neighborhood to keep track of property crimes which actually give you a pretty good feel for a neighborhood. But not all cities participate in the crime reporting.
