My boyfriend and I plan on moving in a couple of months and we have narrowed it down to Salt Lake City and Reno. What really attracted us to the area is the scenery around the area. I just had a few questions regarding the city. Is Salt Lake accepting of interracial couples? (I am white he is black). How is the economy? Could we both easily find jobs there? How is the housing market? What all is there to do in the Salt Lake City Metro Area?

Thanks A Bunch!

Not sure of the % of AAs in SLC, one joked that "all 20 of us know each other." Lots of Hispanics and Middle East people, Asians as well. I think people are very accepting of mixed couples, the ones I have seen around town do not draw stares. Of course, there is always some jerk somewhere but you find that in any city.

Read the threads for your other questions as there are many on those topics.

I think you would be very comfortable in the Salt Lake City area. Maybe not so much in Davis or Utah counties. The city demographic is very diverse.

I am on the porch hanging with my Jamaican neighbor whose boyfriend is a Scotsman while our kids play with our Hispanic neighbors dog and the Chinese neighbor kids. Problem? No.

My black co-worker moved here from California shortly after I did and she loves it, she has a white boyfriend and she said she has fewer problems here as opposed to Los Angeles.

I have met several interracial couples since moving here. We live in a unique area of the Salt Lake Valley www.daybreakutah.com it is nice and eclectic.

The housing market is still falling here, especially in Daybreak since it has only been around since 2005. There are lots of homes for sale, not counting the new homes but I am renting for another couple years until they bottom.

We love it here.

I don't think you'll have any problem being accepted here. Most people you meet will be friendly. I'm not sure what your line of work is, but I wouldn't move here without a job or some serious prospects lined up. Unemployment is currently lower here than the national average, but jobs are fairly scarce and there are lots of people here that are well educated that are looking for jobs so competition can be tough. Housing is somewhat expensive here too, but that is relative to what you're used to. Where will you be moving from?

Salt Lake City Perfect for Us?

Perfect ?? No !!

Will you, can you adapt ??
Will you, can you accept some principles that are NOT to your liking ??

If yes, you will be OK, anywhere in the SLC area.

As far as things to do, I think SLC has Reno beat (unless you are a compulsive gambler, and we have Wendover an hour and a half away for that). We've got museums, Ski Resorts, shopping, bars, theatres a theme park and outdoor activities galore all within 20 min from the city center. It's not such a headache inducing tourist trap like Reno.

It really depends on what part of Salt Lake you choose. The suburbs are very morman and closed minded. Downtown Salt Lake is great and much more open minded. We have an interratial granddaugher and it is hard on her here. I am afraid it will only get worse when she is older and dating.
Shopping isn't bad, the ski resorts and hiking are great. But be prepared to have the mormorns try to control everything you do here. Even the last governer made a statement to the press when they were working on liquor contol changes that he had to see what temple square had to say before a decision could be made.
There is little seperation of church and state. But the views are breathtaking.

That really does depend on the suburb, too, though. I live in a suburb of SL. I am not Mormon and find my town a great place to live. People are very welcoming and friendly. I have a girlfriend whose daughter is interracial and she is a very popular girl with a lot of friends. To be fair, I just met a couple that moved here a couple of years ago and she told me that she and her husband haven't met too many friends.

All I can say is I haven't really experienced any closed mindedness myself and my two daughters enjoy living here, too.
