I'm afraid that wage is about right. If you work for a staffing service you'll make quite a bit more. Of course you'll then work all over the valley and your schedule isn't set, but it might be worth is for $35/hour. I've worked in several states--Idaho, AZ, New York and I know that sometimes there are hospitals that you definitely want to avoid. However, after living here for 8 years, I haven't found that to be the case. I'd choose based on your specialty. U of U has the region's burn clinic and gets the big trauma cases; Primary Childrens, of course, for peds; St. Marks for cardiac care. I like smaller community hospitals so I've worked ICU and ER at 2 different hospitals in Davis County (about 10-15 minutes north of SLC). At one, I worked their prn pool but specified only ER shifts. That bumped my wage up another $10/hour. There are great smaller hospitals all over the valley and traffic can be a beast, so check close to where you want to live too. I love hospital nursing, but if money is the biggest concern I've been told by friends that you can make more doing home health or charge nursing at nursing homes. I personally haven't checked into that, but know several nursing friends who went that route. Good luck!
