I'm childfree - and not originally from here - but I always wondered why stake centers sit empty during the day - when they could be used for day care centers?

And the Church could hire new moms - or even single women to be the caretakers.

I know MANY women (LDS and non) who would jump at the chance to work full-time knowing their kids could be taken care of in their neighborhood. One of my co-workers couldn't find childcare - and left her kid at the local GOLD's GYM - when she couldn't find anyone to take her kid in. I was in shock that she couldn't find affordable care - andher church sits idly by.

What is up with that?

Because it is a *Church* building.
NOT to be used for Commercial purposes !!

That .... AND ..... sue happy America !!!!

Even using the parking lot for fund raising, borders on illegal usage ....

How family friendly is that? And it doesn't have to be "commercial".

Matter of fact it can be damn near non-profit.

I recall many Catholic church buildings used as day care centers in my youth...

It probably has something to do with the fact that the LDS Church encourages mothers to stay home with their kids when they're little. Many LDS moms try to do this. Also, I think most LDS families (and maybe most non-LDS families) would prefer that, if they have to put their kids in daycare, it be in a home environment. A Stake Center definitely doesn't qualify as a home environment.

Amen to that.

Anybody LDS, who has *worked* on Sundays, in the *nursery*, will attest to the fact about *home environment*.
The carpet alone is way to *rough* for any small child !!
All you have is metal chairs and may be one table ...

Above I stated *worked* because it is work, and a lot of it to boot.

We (my wife and I) did it years ago, and to have some relief from having to *hassle* with some kids,
we asked the mothers and fathers of those kids who were a bear to take of, to help once and a while.
Those who had the most unruly kids, were also the least willing to help ...
Oh well ....

We realise that the present situation, requires a lot more Moms to work, to make ends meet.
Our children are no different so, we as grand parents now, take care of the grand children at our home.

If more grand parents, who do have free time, would step in, maybe we need less day care centers ???

When we were both still working (after the kids were raised and *out the door*),
one place where I worked, provided *day care* at work !!!
I realise, that is very rare occasion, but the owners of the company felt that it was cheaper then having the mothers worry.
Half of the cost, of what it would have normally cost, was picked up by the company.
