Default This forum confuses me - relocation to Clearfield

I have been reading as much as I can in this forum and it seems every thread is a mixture of "LDS is great and nothing is wrong with being non-LDS" all the way to "DO not come here if you are not LDS because you will feel out of place." I am confused and getting a little scared. here is my story: I work for Boeing, I currently live in the panhandle of Florida. I just applied for a job in Clearfield because my parents (who live in West Yellowstone Montana) are ailing and I need to be closer to them and this was the only way I could do it without losing my income. I am a 27yo SWF with a 4 yr old child. I consider myself spiritual but not religious. However, I don't let my son watch TV except for two hours on the weekends, I recycle everything, am very environmentally conscious, and would love nothing more than to rent a little acreage when I get out there and homestead. I am ecstatic about seeing mountains again, I miss them so much. So here are my questions:

I am kind of understanding (hopefully) that as long as I do not outrightly have a condescending view of LDS that I can live comfortably within this region?
I have heard not so good things about schools, will my son be able to get a quality education?
From what I have seen, rentals are few and far between and kind of high priced. (now granted I live in Florida and pay 825 for a 1000 sq ft 2 br apt but I was kind of hoping to decrease that a bit) Are there any country rentals within a 30 minute commute of Clearfield?
I admit I am ignorant about LDS but plan to do some research before I get up there. (I want to base my knowledge on fact and not on assumptions or heresy.) But I also don't want to be solicited to join the LDS church, I believe that is my path and my right to choose.

So maybe someone can ease my concerns somewhat about this move? Please?

Do not worry, we moved to Pleasant Grove Utah(located in Utah county very LDS) in December. We have only been asked if we are LDS once and that was at Temple Square. My husbands coworkers who are LDS have gone out of there way to make us feel welcomed, and to be helpfull. No one has pressured us into becoming LDS. Utah is beautiful, plain and simple. as for finding a place try Rent.com. I hope this helps a bit, have a safe move, and of course Blessings to you and yours.

You may want to look at Syracuse too. It is a fairly new and young community so you and your little one will be surrounded by young people. Don't hesitate to look for people renting out their basements too because those are common and really nice deals.

My personal experience with Clearfield is that it is also a young community, packed with AirForce boys (as the airforce base is right there). Those boys tend to be a bit more roudy than humble...but not excessively so. Clearfield as a whole is more run down, and older. Streets tend to be a bit dirtier than in newer areas. The streets are a nightmere near the freeways and you can anticipate INSANE waiting lines to get on the freeway during rush hour.

Utah in general is only about 50% mormon now. My husband and I are not, and although we get mormon missionaries at are door about once a year, my experience is if you just don't open the door, they don't go out of their way to come back.

Utah is not as scary as some people make it out to be. In all honesty, it is a very safe place to raise a family and the mormons are not all "in your face"...well, at least they wouldn't be in Clearfield, Logan, Syracuse, Heriman, etc... It's mostly the very rural places where they get a little wacko.

Single moms are rare in Utah, but if you make the move, just check out Moms Time Out, Utah mothers groups playgroups support - Home and you'll meet plenty of women in your same shoes.

Don't be afraid to come here because of the mormons. They are almost the minority now. In the city of Salt Lake, they are the minority.

As far as places to get good rent, don't worry, you probably will save a little compared to what you're spending, but not much. Clearfield is the "country" as far as Salt Lakers are concerned. Syracuse might offer you hope.

Check out:

Best to you. Hope you find what you're looking for, and don't hesitate...only the extreamists are loud, and they are also the minority. Most people really do live their own lives out here and are happy to let others do the same.

OH! for the schools, they do suck. I blame it on the teachers being union. I'd look at private schools (Challenger is an excellent and still affordable one) - that is where our kids go - preschool is $157/mo.

Charter Schools are popping up all over the place too (they are free, but acceptance is based on lotteries), but they are run by parents, so the education is competitive. There is a great one in the area you're looking at, but I can't think of its name...it might actually be in Kaysville.

This below link lets you access every Utah public school...you can view how they are holding up to national standards. It's not working tonight, but try it later and hopefully it'll be back up.
Utah Performance and Assessment System for Students
When you go to pick a school, a drop down box lets you select a letter (A, B, C, etc...) those letters represent the first letter of the schools names. If you select "C" you would be presented with "Clearfield Highschool" and "Clearfield Elementary" (and anything else that starts with C)

thank you so much, Skye78, that was so informative. (And thank you Michelleleigh as well). Where is the challenger school located at? Do they have a website? Childcare is one thing I am very concerned about. Down here, every daycare that is any good has a six month waiting list and I need to make sure I can get childcare for my son so i can start work as soon as I relocate. I have looked at Goldstone, they are actually my top choice at this point. I figure if I have to live in an apartment, it might as well have a pool and fitness center! Thanks again, I should know within about a week if I am actually moving...

I believe there are several locations in Utah but I don't think there are any in the Clearfield/Syracuse area.

Here's their website.

From looking at their locations, they seem to all be in SLC or south.
