Checking the crime statistics, rape and larceny stands out as high in the Salt Lake City area. Is rape a big conern?

Thanks,

Thanks,
My wife and I have not been raped in over 20+ years in SLC. We do not know of anyone that has been affected, but like anywhere else I'm sure it happens. You usually hear of those crimes taking place in the lower income areas, but there have been some high profile cases in the richer areas in the past (Avenues Rapist).

We have on the other hand been affected by larceny. We've had our car stolen several times and had the car broken into many times on top of that. We have lived downtown and in a richer suburb and have experienced the same thing. Lock your car and don't leave anything on your seat or in clear view. Oh and don't buy a 1995 Honda Accord they are like gold to a thief!

Just to add ... I think the car thieves specifically target the "rich" eastside neighborhoods. I don't know of anyone out here on the far west side who has had a car stolen in the year I've lived here. Probably has happened, but I haven't personally come across it.

On the other hand, both a professor and fellow student in my MBA program had their cars stolen from Sugarhouse (east side) over the summer.

Also my neighbor did have his car stolen, while he was parked at work at a hospital on the east side.

Bottom line is this place has crime just like every other big city. I am myself a bit surprised at the number of car thefts. However, with the exception of a few bad neighborhoods on the west side of SLC proper, parts of West Valley City, Kearns, and a small part of old Magna most areas are decent enough that you could live pretty safely.

As for rape, I'm sure it happens, but I don't think there are multiple serial rapists roaming the streets or anything. Just use common sense

Rape #'s may be high, I'm not sure. That's one of those statistics that may be influenced by better reporting as much as actual incidences. Also, most rape victims know the perpetrator; it's not usually a dark-alley scenario.

I'd say crime as a whole is awfully high in SLC even disregarding its size.

Seriously??? This is one of the more absurd anti-Mormon posts I've seen. Are you aware that rape has little to do with sex, and is mostly about power and aggression?

Prior to 1991, Utah had a below average level of rapes. It has risen steadily since then.

Deseret News | Utah rape rate rising

Correspondingly, the number of non-Mormon residents has steadily risen since then.

Mormon portion of Utah population steadily shrinking - Salt Lake Tribune

So your theory about the Mormons causing the rapes doesn't seem to hold water. After all, when the state was more heavily Mormon, there were fewer rapes.

Rather than unfounded blaming, I think it would be more productive on two things: Fixing the problem; and protecting one's self.

Rapists are opportunists. When I was a BYU student 10 years ago, there was an infamous rapist on the loose. He was not a BYU student. Rather he came there because of the opportunity and he chose his victims at random.

But like the first article mentioned, most rapes occur by acquaintances. So my point is you should take reasonable precautions in public and private, because, as anywhere, you have to watch out for yourself. But it's not like there is a scourge of serial rapists roaming around.

Was this written scarcastically? It is one of the more absurd statements about Mormons I have ever read. I'm not LDS< I dislike a lot of things about this state's attitudes, but this is ridiculous!

not to mention the fact that there are plenty of people here that don't wait anyway. it's not like you need to prey on someone else if you don't want to wait till marraige. just go to a bar or a club.

And rape is a dominance/humiliation issue, not a sexual one.
