I moved to Utah from another state. My experience and opinion only here--

Keep that car, Utah is a car state, even if you're downtown SLC, you are going to want a car.

Kids are everywhere here, that's life. I don't have any suggestions to avoid places with kids because you're going to find them all over.

Utah is pretty safe and almost anywhere is going to be fine depending on what you want. Avoid Kearns, West Valley City and Midvale IMO and it's a good idea to just come out and see the areas because every town has it's own vibe, anywhere you go. I love Murray and Sandy, but I wouldn't want to live there if i was a 20 something without a family. I lived out in eagle Mountain for a year and I hated it because it was just too quiet having come from the bustling metropolis of Gilbert, Arizona.
West Jordan and South Jordan have plenty of new construction if you want something more contemporary and I have also heard that Stansbury Park is a nice place, but it's out a ways from SLC if I remember correctly, so a commute might be longer.

Sugarhouse might be a really good fit for you, as would downtown SLC. Both are going to have a better nightlife and more people where you are in life for Utah than some other places, IMO. If you want a suburb feel, you pretty much just have to throw a dart at a map out here and you'll find it. Drive through on a Sunny Saturday afternoon and get a feel for how many kids are outside playing.

Join the church and your social calendar will always be full, but then there's that kid problem.....I'm kidding- about the church, not the kids
