Moving to SLC from FL - Want a suburb-y neighborhood
Good morning, my wife and I are planning on moving to the Salt Lake City metro area of UT probably by October. We have visited once March 2011 and loved the area and just the "cleanliness" of it to be honest.
I'm trying to get a job transfer there since we want a change of location and just are sick of FL.
Although we would love the ability to walk to stores, we're so used to car life and the fact we own 2 cars and would need it to get to our jobs anyways, we were thinking of not staying in downtown SLC even if The Avenues, Sugar House, etc. look quite appealing and get rave reviews.
One downside to that whole area is the college prescence to be honest, we lived near the University of Central FL and we're just not fans of the whole party atmosphere and well... college kids. We're old people at heart We're very quiet and private (i.e. no nightlife) type of people and just like to sleep somewhere in silence. Plus street parking in snow doesn't seem like something we'd be too happy with!
We're both 27, have 2 small dogs (15 and 20 lbs), would like a minimum of 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. We don't have any children and we're not interested in them either We'd like to spend a max of $1,500/month on rent. We're not too into buying a home since we'll have one we will still be making mortgage payments on in Central FL and attempting to rent out. Our biggest concern is noise and the respect for others as our dogs (at least when we are home) are quick to bark at any loud noises.
One of the more appealing spots looks like Sandy/Cottonwood Heights from what I can read. We do like the easy access to the mountains because we intend to get up there quite a bit.
One of the places we were looking at was The Heights on Quarry Bend. Looks like a brand new development with townhouses which match our needs and within the prices we're looking for. Really most of these properties look great http://www.treorentals.com/ (hopefully it won't be flagged as advertising, it's not mine I swear!)
We'd love any other recommendations for that type of "feel" and in our price range.
Thanks in advance and can't wait to get this relo going! It'll be our first time moving locations so it's a bit overwhelming but with the internet, this forum, and everything else available at our finger tips, hopefully we can make this as easy as possible. Now I just need to tell my parents who live 10 minutes up the road...

Uhmmm, you normally lie thru your teeth ???
I'm trying to get a job transfer there since we want a change of location . Do not come here without a job !! Same problems as everywhere else. Jobs are available but maybe not in your field. Transfer would be the best !

This is kid loving country ! You should get together with Dcisive !
Get in touch with him and he can tell you all about kids ...!
He definitively knows where NOT to relocate to !

They will get used to the idea and may want to visit you a lot !

No, he clearly posted how he felt. He isn't interested in them.
It is very family friendly. But not all of us want kids, nor do we want to deal with them living near us. This is just another tidbit of info used to help he and his wife find the best place to live for their lifestyle.

I can agree with this But really, I have a niece and nephew I semi-tolerate because it's family... but other than that, keep those sticky, loud things away from me

I really have no idea how to stay away from small ones at all here in Utah ...
Unless you lock yourself up in your house and never go outside ?
No wonder we always hear complaints as soon as kids are involved.
I wonder how those who almost despise kids, were when they were young ones ...
Some day, those young ones, if the system will hold up, will, thru their taxes, take care of those who never wanted any posterity.
I live in Bountiful. It is about 15 minutes North of the city. During rush hour I just take US-89 and enter downtown from the East or take the train. Bountiful and Centerville have a quiet, small town feel but with a lot of convenient shopping. During the summer there are block parties and farmers markets. There's also quick access to hiking, fishing, and ski areas. The neighbors are great. All the yards and children are well kept.
Oh boy, you just opened up a huge page from my book, and if the moderator allows I'll speak my peace. I don't care WHAT others may have to say on the subject. First and foremost I will establish one undeniable FACT about living in Utah. Unless you are talking about a bar (the kind with alcohol in it) you are NOT going to be able to find one square mile nor a business devoid of some screaming out of control brat (more like several at a time) in this State. I used to travel for a living across 17 States and frankly there are only about 6 States in the Country I haven't been in, and can say without an ounce of hesitation there is NOWHERE in this country where you have the issues regarding the fact that for SOME reason parunts in this great state are "compelled" to drag their kids (regardless of their desire to go) to pretty much EVERYPLACE the public is allowed. I can count the rare occasions on one hand I've been out to either stores or restaurants over my last 19 years here where I have not been inundated with the screaming complaining brats or having them just flat out get in my way. "Most" of the parunts I've run across don't even exhibit ANY inclination to bridle these out of control youngin's in the first place, let alone restrict their movement about. Whether it's a restaurant, grocery store or whatever it's all the same. They are flat out EVERYWHERE (and not in a good way I'm sorry to say). So needless to say several or more of these board members are going to jump right in and say "why don't you just leave if you're so miserable".
Oh you have NO idea how I would love that. Find me a good job and sell my home that is way upside down in this child infested neighborhood I live in and I'd be gone in a NY minute. There are some realities we can NOT change, and that's one of them sadly. There is NOTHING I treasure more than the rare vacations I get in some place such as the Northwest where I can stay at a Bed and Breakfast that doesn't allow children, and visit some outdoor places they don't go, and just sit and enjoy some nature without the banter of some out of control brat. Yeah, you opened up my can of worms sorry to say. NO I do not have any of them myself, and no I'm actually NOT a self centered selfish person as those that actually know me will attest. I'm just not into examples of "today's parenting" as I grew up in a time and place when parents would take their kids OUT of a restaurant if they were acting up, would NOT take children into a movie if they could NOT be absolutely QUIET. Did NOT take them to many places that adults went to be with other adults.
I am quite sure this will NOT fall on accepting ears as lets face it, I am a significant minority and am literally outside the sphere of what lives here in Utah. Most if not nearly ALL want at least several kids and many 6 or more. They clog the roads with their MAV (don't ask what that is) and drive like they should have their licenses revoked yesterday. Utah maintains a "me first" attitude beyond anything I've ever seen anywhere in the U.S. They won't admit it however. They have the highest rate of prescription drug overdoses, they have the highest usage of anti depressant meds (this I heard from my own doctor so go figure). I'm sure many will like to just try to debate all of this saying they have the sweetest neighbors in the world in a perfect neighborhood, love the fast driving commute with no issues, and ignore the well buried gang problems and increasing property crimes and robberies occurring throughout the State. That's fine I fully expect the "ostrich's head in the sand" reaction to all this. They can't handle the truth so bury the messenger with bad news, nothing new there. A heck of a lot of people need reality checks, and it ain't me......
OK i've had my rant this OP got started so I'm done now....ahhh I feel better now.
Oh dcesive, you just go to the wrong restuarents, as I've told you before. Coime downtown or to Sugar House and go someplace a little expensive. I've NEVER seen a kid in The New Yorker, the Oyster Bar, Ichiban, Bambara, the Metropolitan, etc. And the ones during the day at Eggs in the City, which I frequent a LOT, have good parents who keep them quiet.

Dcisive, I have kids and I will agree with much of what you have said. Although my are older now (almost 12 and 15.5), there are MANY times when we are out someplace and some child is acting up while the parents sit by and allow it. My girls will turn to me and say "if WE ever acted like that, you would have beat the snot out of us".
Yes. Yes I would have.
