What is the drive like from SLC to Montana? Are there scary mountain roads? How about the other direction, towards Las Vegas? I looked at Google map, but would like to know from people who live there and have travelled the roads. Thanks

I don't know about Montana, but the drive to Vegas is pretty easy- I-15 all the way. It's mostly 2-lane straight interstate except for a few miles in Arizona where there's a curvy section through some mountain type stuff (I'm not describing this well!). The stretch from Arizona to Vegas is a little desolate though, while in Utah there are usually towns not too far apart.

I have been both ways, and will actually be making the trip to Vegas in a few hours. The drive to Vegas is easy and quick. Some stretches in southern and central Utah are 80 mph. The only concerning part of the drive is a) if it is snowing, there are several mountain passes between SLC and St. George that are super sketchy in the snow and b) sometimes the Virgin river gorge (the small section of Arizona you pass through) can be sketchy in the rain or at night.

Montana isn't too bad (I haven't made the trip in years) depending on what part of the state you are going to. As long as the weather is good, the trip will be fine. If it is snowing or raining, the trip will be pretty rough.

Thanks. Is the highway two-lane divided in both directions?

To Montana or Vegas? Each way (depending on what part of Montana) is 1-15 (freeway) the whole way. Mostly two lanes except in some places (in Vegas, part of St. George, Utah County), not so sure about how many lanes on the Montana trip, I think the same, two lanes most of the way.

I prefer double divided highway especially when driving though mountainous terrain, which is usually windy and hilly.

As a rule, the more mountainous, the less divided ...

Have you tried to take a look at Goggle earth and plan your trip that way ?
If you can zoom in enough, you may be able to see if divided or not ?

Yikes! I would prefer it the other way around.
I have checked out google map. It is hard to make out on my small screen anyway how steep the inclines are, etc. I just thought that it would be better to hear it from actual travelers.
I have travelled though mountains plenty in the past, just not a fan of it.

Any interstate is a minimum of 4 lanes, 2 in each direction. Some such as Atlanta have 6 in each direction - not that's scary!

The drive from SLC to Montana is a walk in the park. All divided Interstate unless you're off the beaten path. Even then at this time of year there are no real "scary" roads to deal with. I've traveled that way extensively and never had issues unless it's January in a blizzard. Enjoy you'll have it made...
