I think the last post is more understandable if you are from the area. Not for those who haven't been to Salt Lake yet.
Interesting thread...but I would like to also know about cities within 30 miles of Salt Lake...on a real estate site...they listed about a 100 towns/cities within the 30 miles. How about Provo, American Fork, Grantsville, and Tooele. Also what about north of Salt Lake towards the mountains...any prefered towns? Looking for a great deal about $175,000.

I lived in Tooele from August until May and I didn't hear of any gang problems. Though our condo complex did have a bit of a tagging incident. It didn't get up to the floor we were living on, but the floor below us saw a bit of green paint. Then they drew all over the air conditioning units. That is about as much as I saw.

What happened to the days when the worst thing we did was drive by and throw hotdogs at the postitutes on 2nd south? OK that was the 60's. When we lived in Vegas, our son was in little league. There eruppted a gun battle right over the top of the game. Parents were grabbing their kids, a few got shot. That night a gang member made the statment being backlit showing only a shilouette that they had no problem with the kids, they were just in the way. We moved. We had lived in So. Cal before that. I didn't have problems down there. We moved here from San Francisco area. The nickname for the town I lived in was Dodge City. That was for the gun battles right in the middle of the streets during daylight. Our part of town was safer. The north side of the freeway, You didn't really dare go into during the day. The problem is everywhere. In 50 years, it will be called something else and there will be no mafia, or gangs but something new. It evolves.

I am on the way west side of West Jordan, & love it. I personally would never have even considered the east side. Too expensive for what you get, too congested, too poorly set up because it's older. But again, that IMO. The 'gangs' & 'crime' here in the Salt Lake area are NOTHING compared to many, many other cities of equal size. LOL I feel very safe here.

WHO CAN REALLY SAY WHICH PLACE IS BETTER THAN THE OTHER, SAFER THAN ANOTHER? I HAVE LIVED ON BOTH SIDES, EAST AND WEST. IT'S THE PEOPLE THAT MAKE THE DIFFERENCE. I AM WITH THE BELIEF THAT THE PEOPLE ON THE EAST SIDE MOST LIKELY HAVE HIGHER ANNUAL INCOME THAN THOSE ON THE WEST SIDE, BUT SURELY THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS. NOT TO INSINUATE THAT PEOPLE WITH LOWER INCOMES ARE BAD. SOME OF THE VERY BEST PEOPLE I HAVE EVER MET MAY LACK IN FINANCES BUT MORE THAN MAKE UP THE DIFFERENCE WITH A GENUINE SMILE, SINCERE FRIENDSHIP, HONEST OPINIONS, AND UNCONDITIONAL LOVE. THEN AGAIN, I HAVE KNOWN A FEW LESS THAN FORTUNATE (financially) WHO HAVE MADE ME INVEST IN A HOME SECURITY SYSTEM. . (Just in case). I COULD ALSO MENTION THE WEALTHY NEIGHBORS NEXTDOOR. THEY HAVE TWO BOYS THAT ARE SLOWLY BUT SURELY WORKING THEIR WAY INTO THE SL COUNTY COURT SYSTEM, EVEN AS WE SPEAK. NOT A SHRED OF RESPECT FOR THE LAW, COMMUNITY, NOT EVEN THEIR OWN PARENTS. I'M CERTAIN THEY DON'T GO TO THE WEST SIDE TO DO WHATEVER THEY DO. I COULD SHARE SEVERAL STORIES, WRITE ANALOGIES, GIVE EXAMPLES, BUT I THINK I HAVE MADE MY POINT. IT IS. .WHAT IT IS. .ON THE EARLY MORNING OF JULY 24TH 2007, WE WERE ASLEEP, OF COURSE, I GOT UP AT 4:OOam WENT FROM THE BEDROOM TO GET A GLASS OF JUICE AND FOUND THE CABINET JUST ON THE OTHER SIDE OF MY BEDROOM WALL, WAS OPEN AND ITS CONTENTS SCATTERED ON THE FLOOR. IT TOOK A SEC. 2 REALIZE THAT SOMEONE WAS OR IS STILL IN THE HOUSE. I SLOWLY BACKED UP INTO THE BEDROOM AND WOKE MY HUSBAND. AS HE CAREFULLY LOADED MY REVOLVER, I DIALED 911.
HIS SEARCH OF THE HOUSE ENDED WHEN IT WAS OBVIOUS THE INTRUDERS WERE HAD LEFT. THEY HAD STOLEN BOTH OF OUR VEHICLES. NOW, WAS THAT SOME BAD BOYS FROM THE WEST SIDE, OR WORSE ONES FROM NEARBY?

Salt Lake City is like anywhere else in that they have gangs. But really, the problem isn't bad. There's nowhere in the valley you should really be concerned about at all.
I did have one incident; I once saw a gang beating up a guy in front of their apartment complex on 2100 South and about 2200 East, far from the "crime-ridden" west side and deep into the "nice, safe" east side. It did scare me, but it's nothing I got too concerned about.
Either way, it happens everywhere, but there's nowhere in the valley you should be concerned about.
Tooele is very safe. You will have few worries about crime there.

I bet you yelled your intruder into submission or at least the intruders stepped on your keyboard and got the caps lock key stuck. Also who doesn't keep at least one gun loaded and set to kill just in case some @#@##4 goes down?
The Eastsiders just have better stuff to steal!
