BuckeyezRule,

I guess it's a matter of preference. I you want to live where there are tons of kids, dust, no trees, and constant construction, then the far west side is a great place to save a few bucks. I personally think the west side has way more traffic congestion than the east (think Bangerder HWY aka the HWY of death). That side of the valley is overloaded with new folks who rarely know where they are going. I enjoy the mature trees, a recently remodeled home in an established neighborhood, and professional neighbors. Also the drive to Research Park at the U is only 10 minutes away. I can even ride my bike if I want. Man I sound like an east side a-hole haha! GO GATORS!

As far as crime on the east side goes, it is definetly equal in crime (theft) to the west side. I do think there are less violent crimes, but the property crime is higher or at least on par with the west side. When I say "west side" I mean anything west of 7th east for the most part.

Northern Virginia as a whole is very safe, but Manassas has a reputation of being a bit more crime-ridden than some places there. Lehi is probably very safe, but crime can happen anywhere.

I'm gonna tell you, the gang problem in the Salt Lake area isnt really that bad. Especially when compared to other metropolitan areas of similar and even smaller size. Gangs are everywhere people, even in towns of 40,000 people and down.
My best advice would be to do your research. You can live in areas considered ethnic/seedy and not have a single problem, even west of the freeway. I would avoid spots with heavy mexican populations. With those, you always run the high risk of unemployed families/immigrants with nothing to lose. They got their families movin in from mexico, arizona, texas, california because theres good work in that area. They have a lot of kids who dont fit in because of cultural and language barriers, and that can be a problem. The gangs I would consider the highest threat up there, atleast from what ive seen are the mexican gangs, Sur13 and their families, Nortenos and theirs, MS13 etc.

Salt lake city is like any other big city guns drugs and gangs.

It seems like alot of ppl on here have NO IDEA what its really like to live in SLC. Dont get me wrong alot of utah is really white and really mormon but not all areas are mormons and white fences. Ive lived all over from cali to houston to Florida ive been to NYC harlem queens ive been to cali LA hollywood AZ las vegas EVERYWHERE! and the same stuff goes down in SLC.

The worst parts are Glendale, Rose Park, popular Grove, West valley and South salt lake There are really bad parts in Midville magna and ogden even on the eastside of downtown.

I went to west high and horizonte and ive lived in most those areas at one point or another. IVE SEEN PEOPLE GET SHOT AND STABED, Ive been robbed and had guns pulled on me ive seen fights been in fights been jumped by gang members.

There really is dark side to salt lake that some people living in utah may not even know about.

Here is a music video that was filmed in one of the areas ive lived in (PG area and Glendale) I personly know alot of the guys in this video also
