I think that's very true. Not every single parent household raises bad children, although since it's harder to raise children with just one parent, I can see how there would be kids that fall through the cracks and end up misbehaving and causing trouble. I think part of it is kind of a crapshoot. I know kids that behave poorly even with good guidance from their parents. Sometimes a parent can only do so much, and I'm not sure what the answer is for those parents who try as hard as they can to be great parents and still have problem children.........

gang neighborhood proximity red flag number one..... you go to smiths and every car in the parking lot is in the sub $3000 range.. with wheels and tires on it with a value equivalent to at least half that of the vehicle. think i'm joking? go to the rose park smith's on any given day of the week, particularly around 5pm. same goes for the walmart out on 56th west

I'm not sure where you are moving from, but my husband and I just moved out to Draper Utah (outside of SLC, and actually, we came out here for vacation and just decided to stay) from east central Florida and it's so different! As far as gangs go, I am sure you are going to have some kind of gang activity basically anywhere you go. However, as far as crime, over-all (which I am assuming is why you would be concerned about gangs), you can't even compare SLC and the surrounding areas to where we moved from! lol!

I was born and raised in Jacksonville Florida, which I am pretty sure has the highest crime rate in the state of Florida. I have also lived in Miami, Orlando, Daytona Beach, St. Augustine, etc, all of which have a decent amount of crime and gang activity (and my husband is originally from Brooklyn NY). I never really thought much of hearing the sirens all day, or seeing murders, burglaries, etc on the news, because as I said, I was born and raised there. Now, please don't get me wrong, I don't want to make Florida sound like a horrible place. I love Florida and we will definitely be moving back in a few years. Again, I lived there pretty much my whole life, but I have never had a car stolen, or a home broken into, or anything like that. It's just way different for us being in Utah. We don't have to worry about locking everything up as much as we did in FL, etc. The last thing we have been worried about out here is the gangs/crime. And that is really, really nice. I can't tell you for sure what the crime rate is, or for sure how much gang activity there is, but I know it can't be anything horrific. Actually, I would guess it would be pretty low. Especially compared to other cities around the same size as SLC. We don't hear the sirens, or see all of the crazy stories in the news anymore.

Not to mention, the "bad neighborhoods" out here, is nothing compared to the "bad neighborhoods" in Florida! lol! I was actually born in a very bad neighborhood in Jacksonville and lived there until I was about 12. Then we moved to the suburbs. But, when we first moved here, we had someone show us Rose Park and tell us that was one of the few "bad neighborhood" for SLC. Now, I don't know if that's really true, it didn't look like a bad neighborhood to us at all. They may have just been messing with us, because again, we just moved out here and really only know what we have seen and been told by people here. But yeah, that's what we were told.

Anyway, as far as the gang activity goes, if there is any significant gang activity in the SLC area, we certainly have not been affected by it in any way. We feel more safe here than I think we ever have! Oh, and I just wanted to add, we have also noticed that the people, over-all, in Utah (or at least in the SLC area) are just so genuinely nice! That was a pretty new thing for us and we love it! It has inspired us to try as hard as possible to stay positive and be nice to everyone! So, I know I'm not very much help here, but I just wanted to at least let you know that we feel very safe here, and have been very happy here. From our experience here so far, I would highly recommend the SLC area!

gangs are not a nice subject there or here. its how people become failures and harm others.
the training program starts early. its a perverted sense of belonging. lots of felons and gang bangers like to post on CDF.
posters cleverly hiding behind invisible bushes.

Here is something I found on the crime in SLC... Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitors sites is not allowed

I know that isn't really about gangs, but I thought it was interesting. I also just wanted to mention, after checking out the crime statistics for where I'm from in FL, on that same site, it's really not as bad as I thought it was. I just wanted to add that because I did make my home city sound pretty bad! lol! Anyway, I didn't realize that Jacksonville has over 600,000 more people than SLC. I guess that's why there seems to be so much more crime. Naturally, the more people you have in a city, the more crime you have.

Welcome to UT, PitBuUlMommie! I'm glad you decided to stay. it is a different world, in general a kinder one. But yeah, Rose Park is considered not too good - no insult to the folks there, there are planty of good people who live there 'cause I know some. Get used to "fudge" and "frick" instead of the usual F-bomb - and don't forget to use it yourself to avoid insulting epople. Sheesh is also big here, as is darn.

When you're ready, the South Salt Lake City shelter is a no-kill place if an animal comes in healthy. I got my pittie mix there and he's a doll. Of course, there are other shelters, too, that's just the one I'm familiar with.

FYI on "no kill" shelters...Generally speaking they don't put down "adoptable" animals. Many shelters in Utah consider "adoptable" to be 5yrs and under.

If you're including suburbs then both Jacksonville and Salt Lake are about even so it's probably just the fact that it's a city in Utah that it suffers crime below the national average

Correction: Salt Lake City's crime is ABOVE the national average. Property crime in SLC is showing as over DOUBLE the national average.
