Never mind then, I just always assumed it was below. However, is that average comparing all cities in the US or just similarly-sized cities?

That site says that the "city population" for SLC is 184,022, and the "city population" for Jacksonville is 776,417. However, I don't know if that is a very dependable website, or if that info is even up-to-date. It just happened to be one of the first things I came across. According to Wikipedia, the population for the greater Jacksonville metropolitan area is 1.45 million ( Greater Jacksonville Metropolitan Area - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), and a July 1, 2007 estimate placed the Salt Lake City metropolitan area at 1,099,973 ( Salt Lake City metropolitan area - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).
Anyway though, I don't want to get off topic any more than I already have.. lol! I'm so bad at that! So, while I do think that in most cases, the amount of crime in a city depends a lot on the amount of people living in that city, I do agree with you that SLC (well, and I guess just Utah over-all) just has a below-average crime rate. Like I said before, my husband and I love it here so far! It is so nice to not have to worry about locking everything up all of the time, etc. I mean, we still lock our car every time we get out of it, and we still lock up all of the doors in the house at night, but that's just habit. We don't keep the house all locked up during the day though, and that's a change! Right now, DH and I are kind of renting a room in my parents house. It's a long story, but we came out here for vacation and because of some horrible stuff that happened back home in Florida, we just decided to stay. After what happened, we really have no reason to go back. We are going to be out here for at least a couple years. One of the biggest reasons we decided to stay though is the fact that there is actually some work out here. Where as in Florida, that's not really the case. The county we were living in has the highest unemployment rate in the whole state! And because my family (mom, step-dad, sister and brother) all moved out here a couple years ago, we have have a place to stay until we can get our own place! Gotta love family! Anyway, my mom and dad think it's so funny that we are still doing stuff that we were use to doing back home. They are always telling us that we are in Utah, not in Florida, and we need to relax! lol!

When you're ready, the South Salt Lake City shelter is a no-kill place if an animal comes in healthy. I got my pittie mix there and he's a doll. Of course, there are other shelters, too, that's just the one I'm familiar with.

Thanks! As I have said in all of my other posts on here, we are very happy so far. I was shocked the other day when I was standing on the front porch smoking (Yes, unfortunately I am a cigarette smoker, it's so hard to stop.. ), and when some random people drove by they waved to me and smiled?! I was trying to figure out if they knew my family or something, but nope, they were just being nice! lol! It's such a nice change to be around people that are just kind to everyone and not so negative all the time!
I don't know if I had mentioned this before or not, but my sister actually volunteers at a shelter in SLC. I am pretty sure it's the one in Murray... Welcome to the Utah Humane Society of Utah. Donate a car, boat or RV to The Humane Society of Utah DH and I have decided that we are also going to start to volunteer there. When it comes time for us to get our next pup, we haven't decided if we are going to buy from a reputable breeder or if we are going to adopt, but either way, we will definitely be volunteering to try and do our part to help.
OH, and I also wanted to say, another thing that we have really liked about living in the SLC area is the fact that it seems like people aren't as judgmental towards the so-called "dangerous" breeds! Where we live (In Suncrest, on South Mountain, in Draper), most people own dogs, and there are all different breeds! My parents own Schnauzers (so those are the dogs we have been walking, a big change from our APBTs! lol! ), across the street there's a beautiful Golden Retriever, down the road is a Yellow Lab, around the corner there is some kind of adorable hound and then 2 gorgeous Sharpies! And that's just the dogs closest to us. And no one around here seems to have any problem with "pit bulls"! That is so cool to me! lol!

Wow! That's interesting, and very, very surprising! Thanks for the link. But, even with that, I still feel way more safe here than I did back home. I think that would be the lesser of 2 evils.

They can be the best dogs when they are properly bred, raised, trained, socialized, controlled and cared for, as all dogs should be. APBTs are our #1 favorite breed, hands down. It's such a shame that so many "pit bulls" end up with such horrible owners. And it's such a shame that so many people know so little about these dogs. One of the many things that I have really liked about Utah though, is the fact that not as many people seem to hate "pit bulls", and other so-called "dangerous" breeds. They seem to be a lot more open-minded when it comes to stuff like that, and I love that!

Ah well, that crime rate is for Salt Lake City only, whose boundaries don't extend into the suburbs but do extend into neighborhoods such as Glendale, Rose Park and Poplar Grove, which are populated by immigrants from Latin America and the Pacific Islands (which, unfortunately, brings a higher crime rate with it). Suburban life is much more safer in the city

I've never really noticed a lot of outstanding gang activity. I guess I just don't really know how to identify a gang, but there don't seem to be a lot of incidents involving gangs. There's a bit of a graffiti problem, but like someone else already said, it's suburbanite teenagers who do that (the majority of the time they're not affiliated with real gangs).

Hahaha there may be a few but nothing like some other states! It is a beautiful state, a lot to do, there us very few places I don't feel comfortable going by myself but for the most part, let's put it this way, I have grown up being able to just walk into our neighbors houses because it is not really something we needed to worry about to lock the door. Utah is very safe and us a great place to live and start a family

Gangs
Gangs are a fact of life here (Salt Lake) as in any metropolitan city if you are moving to Salt Lake, avoid areas on west side from 2100 south west of I-15, north.
In most other towns and cities in northern Utah gang activity is usually transient and not a big problem.
