It is very sad dcisive!! I am hoping that with national coverage and attention Utah gets help with changing the air quality standards. Here is round 2 airing locally.

Where's the legal action against all of the drivers, homes, and businesses in the valley?

Many people here keep harping on the refineries and Kennecott, and yet heavy industry's share of the valley's air pollution is only 11% (source). Even if the refineries, Kennecott, and all other heavy industry in the valley were shut down completely, our air would still be nearly 90% as bad as it is now. So, is that acceptable? An 11% improvement, plus then having to deal with the thousands of people now out of work?

The myopic, repeated focus on industry here on this thread kind of implies that 11% is enough of an improvement. So go ahead, keep your head in the sand about what's REALLY causing the pollution, and continue beating the refinery dead horse.

In the meantime, if you'd personally like to make a difference beyond repeatedly posting articles that all say essentially the same thing, stop driving and start walking, biking, or using mass transit.

What are you talking about? The air quality standards have ALREADY been changed. We just continue to fail in meeting those standards. We don't need any help changing the standards. We need help adhering to the existing stringent ones. Even if there were no heavy industry in the valley, we still wouldn't meet the EPA standard on most inversion days.

^^^+10^6. All the industry-is-bad stuff rhetoric is an easy target for those who aren't willing to examine their own practices, habits, comforts and politics - and those of their neighbors, their families and their own communities. And then be willing to change. Or, for some, to simply move away and keep posting the same tired stuff.

I might consider settling for NOT continuing to pass older cars and worst yet some of those nasty pickup's that belch that black smoke or are older with higher polluting exhausts. It's time to either force them to add pollution controls on them, fine them or make them buy newer cleaner burning models. But we all know with the "I'm in Utah so I can do as I please" attitude that ain't gonna happen. So the problem shall continue....

No kidding. Outsiders who don't even live here, or were here for only a short while, inundating this thread ad nauseum... and with lazy links rather than any actual original or intelligent contribution.
