Default In town this weekend... need some tips

I am thinking about taking a job in Orem and my fiance and I are flying into town this weekend to get a feel for the Area. We will be spending some time in the provo, orem area but we also want to get a feel for SLC.

Here is where we need your help. We are looking to get a feel for night life, art scene, etc and would like your help with the following?

What areas of SLC should we check out to get a feel for the art scene?

What are some of the best resteraunts in the area?

This means everything from fancy places to the best little mom and pop shop to get a cup of coffee?

What sites should we visit?
we dont' mind doing the touristy thing?

What places should we visit to get a feel for what its truely like to live in the SLC area?

Any suggestions for events, activities outdoor atractions are also appreciated.

Please note we are in town this weekend only.... THANKS SO MUCH!!!

I'd be interested in these questions as I'm flying in on Sunday - Tues for an interview. I think I'm staying at the Peery Hotel somewhere in the downtown? Anybody know of some cool stuff I should try and check out while I'm in town??

Last weekend, you missed a killer weekend. Everyone was out hitting Alta, getting some early ski turns! It was crazy.

There are quite a few restaurants that I like:

Mexican: Red Iguana:
Dedicated to Ramon Cardenas Jr.
Awsome Mole sauces. I love this place

American: Porcupie Pub and Grill and the mouth of the canyons.
Porcupine Pub & Grille
They are having Octoberfest right now, and has a fun festive atmosphere.

Ruths Diner: Ruth's Diner - A Salt Lake City Restaurant Tradition Since 1930 I love going to this place. Never been disappointed.

I also like Ruth's Diner. If it's warm enough, eat outside.

I'd recommend a trip up to Park City just for the helluva it.

Maybe check out what's happening by going here: http://www.slweekly.com/

Currently, links aren't working for me. Sorry.

Hopefully you have a wonderful weekend here in Utah. Our state has a little bit of everything... BUT... (if you move here) you might want to consider the following...

WORKING IN OREM: If you want to live near the good restaurants and the art scene you don't want to live in the Orem/Provo area. Don't get me wrong... Orem is nice (with beautiful mountain views)... but it's mostly middle class suburban sprawl... in Utah County... which means the population is very conservative and about 80% Mormon. You'll find plenty of Walmart's and scrapbooking supply stores in the Provo/Orem area... but you want find many upscale restaurants, night clubs, or anything to do with art. If you've got a family to raise... Orem is wonderful... but if you're not LDS and you're looking for any sort of urban experience in Utah... you won't find it within 40 miles of Orem.

From your description... it sounds like you want to LIVE near downtown Salt Lake... the Avenues or Sugarhouse area would seem to be a much better fit. The art scene is much more lively, the population is much more diverse, and you'll find a plethora of restaurants near downtown Salt Lake too.

You should know... if you choose to LIVE in downtown Salt Lake... and WORK in OREM... you're asking for a miserable and frustrating commute of about 45 minutes to 1 hour... in good traffic. Personally I wouldn't even try it! Utah is a wonderful place where most people live less than 25 minutes from where we work... and traffic is an afterthought (having lived in Washington DC I know firsthand about miserable traffic). Don't punish yourself by living and working at completely opposite ends of the greater Salt Lake metropolitan area.

Take the Orem job if you can live and work in Utah County... and make the trip up to Salt Lake on the weekends.
