My husband's company relocated to SLC and he is going with them . Okay, the problem for me is, I just finished cancer treatment and am still recuperating from all. Also doctors told me my cancer has a high recurrence rate within 1-2 years. I should live healthy and keep my immune system strong. I thought ok moving to utah will help me heal with all the fresh air and mountains. yesterday someone told me about the air pollution in SLC and I started researching and I was kind of shocked. I am really scared of moving there now ,reading about ground water conatamination and the inversion etc. My husband still wants to go ,so I either have to move with him or stay behind in TN. We have been trying to find houses in SLC, but now we would have to look at places outside SLC that are not in the basin. Which towns would we have to look at that do not have the same pollution problem as SLC and that are not too expensive to live in. my hubby gave up his job for 6 months to take care of me during my cancer treatment and now we need money, his company pays good so that is why he really needs to go to Utah with them. I would love to go there but not if it's bad fo my health. Just can't figure out online which towns are in the basin with SLC ,how far out would we have to go where there is better air . would appreciate it if anyone can help .

Go up, above the inversion layer. What is your budget, generally where us the job, and how long a commute can he stand?

If we come out it will be to either Suncrest or Heber.

My husband would not mind commuting up to 40 or 50 miles from SLC. how about going north , also is the air quality in general bad during the rest of the year or only in winter.

It's only the winter that you really have to worry about. We get a few inversion days at the end of december, lots in January and by the end of february, it's usually not bad. We get a few smoggy days in the summer, but not many. Last summer was bad because we had a ton of wild fires, but that is not usually a common occurrence. Going north doesn't help, sadly, it's higher elevation that you need. Park City is out of the inversion, and Heber doesn't have as many problems either, but Heber would be a crazy commute. I read somewhere that Utah has an average of 38 smoggy days per year. The rest of the year, the air quality is quite good. I think honestly, it's miserable during the inversion, but compared to the air quality of other cities that have bad air quality all year round, it's a trade off to deal with the inversion (even though it does stink).

I'm very sorry to hear of your cancer, I wish you the best in recovery. I think park city is a good fit for you if your husband is willing to do a 40 or 50 mile commute. He can take the I-80, they are pretty good about keeping that road plowed. There are only a few days per year where the drive is impossible because of a snow storm.

thank you all for your input, I believe park city would be too expensive for us to find something decent and nice and SLC will be the only choice. If the air only gets bad in winter, maybe I could move back home for a couple of months. So you think the chemicals and metals from the coppermine do not affect air quality outside of winter, they are awfully close to the city etc. How is the drinking water quality,is it safe.I read Kennecott built s.th. to purify the water .

There is the Suncrest community in draper, up on top of Traverse mountain. But the houses up there are more expensive

I honestly don't know about how the copper mine affects the air quality. It's pretty far west, and as far as I know, they don't blast much. I'd be more worried about North Salt Lake, where the refineries are.

The water is excellent here, it comes from mountain run off, and it tastes fantastic to me.

I would recommend getting an air purifier for inside your home. That will at least help, if you are worried about air quality.

OK, I narrowed things down to Draper and Ogden for now. The air quality ranking in Ogden is a little better than SLC. It is 10.3 for SLC and 25.9 for Ogden. The average air quality for the US is 82.8 . The scale goes from 1 to 100. The higher the number the better . I checked where I live the ranking is 22.3 . did not even know it was that low, so it is about the same as Ogden. I start looking for houses to rent in that area. thanks for advice. draper seems to be nice, have to read more about it.

I personally, would not want to commute from Ogden to Salt Lake City on a regular basis. I know the air quality is important, but you have to remember that goes by city, not county. Draper's air I don't believe is as bad as closer to the city and the refineries in north Salt Lake. Draper is much better for a commute, he could even take the light rail (TRAX), or the faster train, the Front Runner.
