After just moving to SLC in October of last year I came across a weird phenomenon that we didn't have in Florida:
A large number of individuals at my workplace mentioned going to put flowers on their loved one's grave this weekend for Memorial Day even if they weren't part of army, navy, etc. I spoke to my parents about it and they didn't do that in FL or NY. I googled it and saw it was only for a few select states. Is this just a normal thing for Utah?

I've only been here a few years and I've witnessed similar things. In fact, on KSL.com today, there is an article on Elder Nelson, who is a "big shot" in the LDS church, and he is quoted as saying:

"Memorial day reminds us, yes, of our ancestors," Nelson said. "Everyone has parents and grandparents and great grandparents and ... there is a rich treasure of information on each one."

So I guess out here in Utah, Memorial Day is for remembrances other than those I believe the holiday was originally created for back on May 5, 1868, though the creation date may be open to speculation (see the following hyperlink: Memorial Day )

For what it's worth, it's not the only unusual custom I've seen here

I grew up in New Mexico, and Oklahoma. In both places we always put flowers on all family members graves. I was always taught that although Memorial Day was originally created to honor veterans, that after the creation of Veterans Day in November, it was changed to honor all dead.

Yeah, my family used to put flowers on the graves in California too. And, we do the same now in Utah.

After doing our part for the ancestors, wifey and I spent the rest of the day at City Creek Center in downtown SLC. It's the first time I've been there and it was awesome. I highly recommend it.

It was a family tradition in my family. And the cemetery we went to was 2 hrs from home. Not a quick task for my parents with six kids.
